Three Arizonans, Terry, Sylvia, and Junior, head to Malibu Beach for a sun-drenched vacation with one clear goal: to learn how to surf, soak up the coast, and track down Terry’s brother, Skeet, Malibu’s infamous big kahuna and a former football star whose promising career was cut short by a skull injury.
While the girls catch their first waves, Len is drawn to Terry, Milo finds himself falling for Junior, and Sylvia develops feelings for Skeet, setting up three budding romances against the bright backdrop of the coast. Milo heads to Casey’s Surfer, the pier-side hangout where surfers and locals gather, hoping to blend in; the girls slip inside on the strength of Terry being Skeet’s sister, while Milo is kept out as a mere “gremmie.”
To gain entry into Skeet’s unruly circle, a club known as The Lodge, Milo attempts to “shoot the pier”—a daring surfing stunt that tests both nerve and balance. The risk ends in pain when he crashes into a post, injuring himself and sparking a heated clash between Len and Skeet. Terry steps in with a warning for Len, reminding him that Skeet’s skull injury still lingers and could make him dangerously unpredictable. Throughout these tensions, Sgt. Wayne Neal — the anti-surfing police sergeant with a wary eye on Skeet — watches every move, hoping for a slip that could clear the beach of Skeet’s influence.
As the social dynamics unfold, Skeet’s reputation is questioned when a party at Pauline’s beach house explodes into embarrassment: Pauline reveals Skeet is a kept man, a revelation that lands with the approval of the ever-watchful Sgt. Neal. Pauline embodies the wealth and distance of the coast, and her confrontation with Skeet crystallizes the reality behind his larger-than-life image.
In the end, faced with a choice shaped by love and truth, Skeet decides to return to Arizona with Sylvia, stepping away from the chaos that surrounded him. The arresting watch of Neal gives way to a quieter conclusion, and the girls wrap up their Malibu getaway by enjoying the rest of the vacation with their respective boyfriends, leaving the surf, the sun, and Skeet’s legend behind them as they head home.
