Thirteen-year-old twin sisters Sam Stanton Ashley Olsen and Emma Stanton Mary-Kate Olsen are opposites growing up in Evansville, Indiana. Sam is a star soccer player and a tomboy who secretly wants to attract boys, while Emma is a popular girly girl who adores fashion and makeup but longs to be better at sports. Their dad, Jerry Stanton Eric Lutes, is a dedicated soccer coach under pressure from his wife, Denise Stanton Kathryn Greenwood, to pick Emma for the Hurricanes co-ed team.
Just as Jerry is about to select Sam for his team after Round 2 of tryouts, Buzzards coach Willard Holmes Keith Knight picks Sam. Sam is not thrilled to join a team that hasn’t won in years, and Emma finds it difficult to please her dad, so the two hatch a plan to switch places so each can play on the team they prefer. The swap teaches Sam to share the spotlight and helps Emma and Jerry grow closer.
Their mom Denise becomes the Buzzards’ new coach to prove her husband wrong and pushes the team toward the finals. Along the way, Emma discovers her goalie talent and becomes a stronger athlete. At the finals, Hurricanes’ regular goalie Richie Jake LeDoux is injured, and Emma steps in as goalkeeper. With 20 seconds left, Sam kicks a shot that Emma, defending the goal, blocks—tying the game.
The Hurricanes and the Buzzards emerge as co-champions of the Youth Soccer League organization tournament. Off the field, Sam Ashley Olsen lands a date with Greg Jeffries Trevor Blumas, and Richie goes on a date with Emma Mary-Kate Olsen, while Jerry learns to treat his daughters equally and realizes that winning isn’t everything.
