Stolen Kisses 1968

Antoine Doinel, now a young man, is discharged from the army as unfit because he would rather read novels and write to his sweetheart, violinist Christine Darbon than follow orders. During his service he fills her inbox with letters—often more than one a day—though she later recalls that not all of them were kind, and she never writes back. When Christine is away with friends for a skiing trip, her parents host Antoine and, sensing he needs a job, help him land a position as a night clerk at Hôtel Alsina, where he spends most of his time absorbed in books.

Christine Darbon returns and, after a long separation, the two seem to rekindle their connection. One morning a man, accompanied by a private detective, presses Antoine to lead them to a room where a woman has recently checked in. The woman turns out to be the man’s wife, sharing a bed with another man, and the ensuing chaos leaves Antoine blamed for the disturbance and out of work. Yet this incident paradoxically opens a door: he befriends the detective and is hired by the detective’s agency, learning the tricks of the trade.

As his work at the agency unfolds, Antoine’s path crosses with Colette, the object of his earlier infatuation from his days with Antoine Doinel—now married to Albert Tazzi. The job soon pulls him away from Christine, as he struggles to balance shadowing people with keeping an eye on Christine’s world. In a twist of fate, the owner of a shoe store, Georges Tabard, hires Antoine by pretending to be a stock boy to uncover why no one seems to like him. Antoine is drawn into an affair with Georges’s wife, Fabienne Tabard, a liaison that complicates his sense of loyalty and romance. When the truth threatens the agency and its client, Antoine is forced to confess, and shortly after, his mentor at the agency dies.

The next chapter finds Antoine reinventing himself as a TV repairman, a role that keeps him distant from Christine. A mishap—he crashes a van into Christine’s father’s car, though nobody is hurt—tests forgiveness, which Christine’s parents grant, and her father later urges her to reconnect with Antoine. Christine, in a bid to win him back, deliberately disables a TV and requests a repair, giving Antoine a chance to prove himself, even if his skills are rough around the edges. After hours of trying, he finally resolves the issue, revealing a tender, patient side that rekindles their bond. The morning after their reconciliation, Antoine proposes, and Christine accepts.

The couple strolls through a park, feeling a renewed sense of possibility, when a man who has shadowed Christine for days steps forward to declare his love as something “permanent,” a stark contrast to the more transient affection Antoine has navigated. The exchange forces Antoine to face his own patterns and, in a quiet moment of self-recognition, admits a chilling honesty: the other man’s claim echoes his own habits, and he quietly concedes, “He must be.”
