An American conductor, John Meredith, and his manager Hank Higgins travel to the Soviet Union just before the Nazi invasion. During a 40‑city concert tour Meredith falls for Soviet pianist Nadya Stepanova. The pair witness thriving Soviet citizens living the Communist ideal, a harmony shattered when German forces finally strike.
