Joseph Balsamo, Orson Welles, known as Count Cagliostro, unfolds through a series of flashbacks that trace a complex rise from hardship to notoriety. The tale begins with a French gypsy boy who endures sieges of cruelty—tortured under Viscount de Montaigne, Stephen Bekassy and doomed when his parents are ordered to hang. He is saved by a band of gypsies led by Gitano, Akim Tamiroff, and he swears revenge against the Viscount, fanning the flames of a restless, calculating ambition. This origin sets the stage for a life shaped by illusion, manipulation, and a hunger for power that will soon be fueled by science’s newest frontier.

As years pass, the young man encounters the hypnotic arts of Dr. Mesmer, Charles Goldner, whose work he initially misreads as mere trickery. Rather than healing, he seizes the method as a weapon, bending minds and bending fate to his will. Adopting the name Count Cagliostro, he becomes a dazzling figure across continental courts, rich in wealth and prestige, renowned for the uncanny control he wields over others. It is this ascent, built on charisma and a dangerous new skill, that brings him into a perilous alliance of aristocrats and conspirators. The plot thickens when de Montaigne teams with Madame du Barry, Margot Grahame, to pull off a daring ruse: Lorenza, Nancy Guild, will impersonate Queen Marie Antoinette to obtain a fabled necklace and tilt the balance of power in their favor. The scheme binds together a web of envy, romance, and deception, with Zoraida, Valentina Cortese, at its center as she grapples with jealousy of Lorenza’s growing influence over Cagliostro.

The narrative follows Lorenza’s fraught entanglement with Cagliostro, as well as the chaotic love triangle that forms around her. Gilbert, Frank Latimore, tries to protect or rescue Lorenza as she is drawn deeper into Cagliostro’s orbit, and the plot ultimately culminates in a spectacular collapse of Cagliostro’s carefully constructed world. The actions of the conspirators coincide with a turning point in the French court: King Louis XV, Robert Atkins, dies, and Marie Antoinette ascends to influence, a shift that intensifies the pressure on Cagliostro and his schemes. The queen’s response to the threat looming over her reputation becomes decisive, and the stage is set for a confrontation that could undo them all.

Zoraida confronts the unfolding deception by bringing Lorenza before Marie Antoinette to reveal the web of lies surrounding Cagliostro’s plot. Lorenza, initially willing to testify, is nonetheless subjected to Cagliostro’s chilling power, and even the venerable Dr. Mesmer’s influence seems to tilt toward salvation for the cunning hypnotist. A dramatic moment arrives when Mesmer uses a tangible symbol—the necklace itself—to force Cagliostro to confess, breaking the spell that has sustained him. Yet the climactic chase continues, with Cagliostro waking from trance and escaping alongside the hypnotized Lorenza. In the end, Gilbert closes the pursuit by confronting Cagliostro in a sword fight, delivering the final, fatal blow that ends the Count’s long and infamous masquerade.
