Michael Chekhov (Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chekhov, 16 August 1891 – 30 September 1955) was a Russian‑American actor, director, author and influential theatre practitioner. Born in Saint Petersburg to Alexander Chekhov, a customs official and writer, and Natalya Golden, a Russian‑Jewish governess, he grew up in a cultured middle‑class family and was the nephew of playwright Anton Chekhov. After studying under Konstantin Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre First Studio, he quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant student, later directing the First Studio when it became Moscow Art Theatre II in 1922. His early stage work was marked by experimental uses of affective memory, which led to a nervous breakdown and prompted Stanislavski to reassess his own system. Disenchanted with the limits of naturalism, Chekhov forged his own approach that emphasized imagination, physical gesture and the “psychological gesture,” a technique that externalizes a character’s inner need before internalizing it. He fled Soviet Russia in the late 1920s, teaching in Germany, Lithuania and England, where he founded the Chekhov Theatre School at Dartington Hall. In 1939 he emigrated to the United States, where he continued to teach actors such as Marilyn Monroe, Yul Brynner, Clint Eastwood and Anthony Quinn, and appeared in memorable film roles, most famously as the Freudian analyst in Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound (1945), which earned him an Academy Award nomination. His written work, including On the Technique of Acting (1942) and the abridged To the Actor (1953), remains a cornerstone of modern actor training. Michael Chekhov died in Beverly Hills in 1955, leaving a legacy that bridges the Russian avant‑garde and contemporary Western performance practices.
