He works to govern his province with fairness, balancing the needs and customs of the many tribes that make up the Peoples of the River, while navigating the wary, sometimes fearful eyes of those who call him “Sandi” or “Lord Sandi.” His ally is Bosambo, Paul Robeson, a literate and educated tribal chief who understands both tradition and the changing world and serves as a bridge between the colonial authorities and the local communities.
