Sanders of the River 1935

Sanders, Leslie Banks, is a colonial District Commissioner in the vast, unsettled lands of Colonial Nigeria. He works to govern his province with fairness, balancing the needs and customs of the many tribes that make up the Peoples of the River, while navigating the wary, sometimes fearful eyes of those who call him “Sandi” or “Lord Sandi.” His ally is Bosambo, Paul Robeson, a literate and educated tribal chief who understands both tradition and the changing world and serves as a bridge between the colonial authorities and the local communities.

In the background, the Governor of the Territory, Charles Carson, watches the fragile balance, hoping for stable governance. But when Sanders goes on leave, the atmosphere shifts as King Mofolaba, [Tony Wane], starts a rumor that Sanders has died, and the whispers quickly threaten to spark inter-tribal war. The tension is fanned by gun-runners and slavers who profit from chaos, raising the stakes for everyone involved.

The relief force arrives under Ferguson, known to Nigerians as Lord Ferguson, [Martin Walker], but he is unequal to the task and is soon captured and killed by King Mofolaba. Back from leave, Sanders returns with a renewed resolve to restore peace and order to the region. The situation intensifies when Lilongo, Bosambo’s wife, [Nina Mae McKinney], is kidnapped, sending Bosambo into a relentless pursuit of her abductors. He is captured by them, but a relief force commanded by Sanders intervenes, rescuing him.

With the threat temporarily contained, Bosambo faces down his captors and exacts a decisive**,** lethal blow by killing King Mofolaba. In the aftermath, Sanders names Bosambo as the King of the Peoples of the River, recognizing his leadership and the bridge he has built between two worlds. The tale closes on a note of uneasy peace and the promise of continued cooperation between colonial authorities and the river tribes, each learning to navigate power, loyalty, and the cost of protection in a fragile frontier.
