Spoilers ahead
The film opens with a woodcutter working under the watchful eye of Siddappa, a stern village landlord who calls the shots in the little community. When the tree he’s cutting finally fractures and crashes down, the man is killed instantly, leaving his wife to face a cruel new reality. Parvathamma Parvathamma pleads with Siddappa to cover the funeral expenses for her and their two children, but Siddappa remains cold and unfeeling, turning them away and setting in motion a seed of resentment that will shape the brothers’ lives. Their older son, Vishwa, grows up dutiful and firmly in Siddappa’s orbit, while Veerabhadra, known as Bhadra, becomes easygoing and free-spirited, with little reverence for the man who holds power over their lives.
