Meledathu Raghavan Nair is the dedicated pillar of a large and closely-knit family that includes his mother, wife Malathi, brother Vijayakumaran Nair, sister Sudha, uncle [Kunjammama] (/actor/kunchan), and his daughter Nalini. When Raghavan’s father passes away, he bears the heavy burden of maintaining the family, which is burdened with significant debts that threaten their stability. These debts have escalated to the point where the family faces legal action, and at this critical juncture, his uncle Kunjammama demonstrates profound love and generosity by selling his property to help clear the family’s debts, illustrating the deep bonds of kinship and sacrifice that define their relationships.

Raghavan’s hope and pride rest heavily on his younger brother, [Vijayakumaran Nair] (/actor/mammootty), who is diligently pursuing a law degree with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. Raghavan envisions a bright future for his brother and is proud to see him succeed. Once Vijayakumaran completes his studies and begins practicing law, he receives a marriage proposal from Shobha, the daughter of a prominent senior advocate under whom he has been working. Their marriage marks a significant milestone in Vijayakumaran’s life, though it introduces a complication—Shobha’s proposal arrives contrary to the family’s earlier plan that he would marry Nalini, daughter of Kunjammama.

This leads to a minor but tense disagreement between Vijayakumaran and Raghavan, where Raghavan’s deep respect for family traditions and loyalty to Nalini conflict with Vijayakumaran’s choices. To uphold his loyalty, Raghavan arranges a marriage for Nalini with someone else before Vijayakumaran’s own wedding, which creates further strain. After their marriage, Shobha begins to assert dominance within the household, attempting to control household affairs and creating friction with other family members. Small disagreements emerge, highlighting the clash between her modern, assertive attitude and the traditional values held by the family.

The family soon faces another challenge when a marriage proposal for their only sister Sudha arrives. The prospective groom’s family demands a substantial sum of money and gold, creating a financial strain on Raghavan, who turns to his brother Vijayakumaran for help. Vijayakumaran, in turn, asks his wife Shobha for assistance. She agrees to help but only on the condition that the family returns the money, asserting her expectation for respect within the family context. This causes tension, especially when the family members sit together for a meal, and Raghavan, coming straight from the fields, joins them, which irritates Shobha. She criticizes him for the unhygienic appearance caused by his work in the fields, which deeply offends his sister Sudha, who sees her brother insulted.

Shobha’s refusal to fund Sudha’s marriage unless the entire family submits to her authority stokes Raghavan’s sense of insult and pride. To resolve the crisis, Raghavan makes the difficult decision to pawn his share of the family’s wealth, enabling him to gather the necessary funds for his sister’s marriage. Meanwhile, a clash between Shobha and Kunjammama intensifies, leading Kunjammama to leave the family home. Feeling that his presence might only bring more conflicts, Raghavan also departs and begins a new chapter by acquiring land and taking up farming, distancing himself from the chaos of his previous life.

Vijayakumaran, now estranged from the family, struggles with feelings of alienation. He seeks out his father-in-law (the advocate) for advice, who reflects that the root of the problem lies in Vijayakumaran’s inability to control his wife. Angered by the situation and the chaos at home, Vijayakumaran confronts Shobha, ultimately slapping her, which signifies his internal conflict and regret for the circumstances. Recognizing his brother’s pain, he visits Raghavan in his new life and urges him to return home.

However, Raghavan, speaking with loving understanding, declines Vijayakumaran’s pleas, expressing that he will come back only when he feels the time is right. He reassures his brother of his unwavering love and support, emphasizing that family bonds are resilient despite the hardships they face. The story concludes with Raghavan cherishing the deep love and brotherhood they share, highlighting the themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of family ties.
