Ramji is a naive and dutiful village cook who carries the heavy burden of arranging his sister’s marriage since they are orphans. He locates a good suitor and, facing the costly dowry, plans to travel to London to work as a chef for a wealthy British-Indian family, with the understanding that part of his salary will go toward paying back the dowry. On arrival, the dream turns sour: the millionaire employer falls seriously ill and dies before Ramji can complete the paperwork, leaving him jobless and stranded. To keep his promise to his sister, Ramji accepts a difficult path and starts working illegally as an expert Indian chef in a Delhi-based Indian restaurant run by an NRI named Guru, a man with a wife and a handicapped son. Through his warmth, good manners, and impeccable cooking, he earns the family’s trust and the restaurant begins to prosper, attracting the attention of the police who are keenly watching his unauthorized entry.

To navigate the legal maze, Guru’s cunning lawyer friend, Jai Kapoor, proposes a drastic solution: a marriage to a British citizen to smooth the path for his defense. He also suggests a marriage of convenience with his own girlfriend, Samira, to satisfy the paperwork. Ramji reluctantly agrees to this arrangement, and the wedding is held over a weekend in a church, with Ramji even converting to Christianity and taking the name Robert. For these schemes, the lawyer extracts hefty fees from Guru and deposits them into the joint account of his wife, Samira. The plan seems to work at first, but the legitimacy of the union soon comes under scrutiny as authorities grow suspicious.

As the consulate grows wary, the embassy invites Ramji and Samira for an interview to sort out the paper trail. In a chance encounter at a bus stop, Ramji learns more about Jai Kapoor’s shrewd, manipulative nature from Jai’s ex-wife, who recounts how Jai had promised her a future and then walked away with her and her son. This revelation deepens Ramji’s empathy for Samira and hardens his resolve to see the truth through. Meanwhile, ongoing police scrutiny forces Ramji and Samira to live in close quarters, fueling the tension between Ramji’s rural sensibilities and Samira’s urban outlook. To break the ice and win Samira’s trust, Ramji begins staging small acts of care—cooking delicate dishes and sharing their flavors—so she can see beyond his humble exterior and recognize his genuine character.

Yet Ramji’s financial strain continues to mount. He cannot send the dowry installments, and his sister’s in-laws harshly eject her from the house. Samira steps in to help, redistributing the funds she and Jai had gathered—ensuring her long-time friend is cared for and keeping the family’s needs in view. The pressure culminates in a tense immigration interview where Ramji, perhaps overwhelmed, reveals more than asked, leading to a rejection of his application and the looming threat of deportation. Just when hope seems to fade, a lucky turn arrives: Ramji wins a cooking competition and earns a substantial prize along with new employment opportunities at the Ritz Hotel.

With new opportunities and a clarified sense of purpose, Ramji chooses not to remain in the UK. He decides to use his £50,000 prize money to build an English-language school in his village, a step toward eradicating illiteracy there. Samira decides to join him in returning to India, and the plan shifts from escape to rebuilding—together. Ten months later, a new, India-based restaurant stands ready to welcome customers, with the entire family watching for the grand inauguration. The film closes on a note of mystery and celebration as a renowned guest makes his appearance: Amitabh Bachchan, who appears as the guest of honor to cut the ribbon, signaling a hopeful new chapter for Ramji, his sister, and their village.

  • Ramji’s mother, played by Abha Parmar, offers quiet, steady support throughout the journey.
