From a nameless boy abandoned at a very young age, life in a rough village begins with taunts about not having a name. One day a compassionate priest gives him a name: Ram Jaane, which means “Ram knows,” and this name comes to define his identity. He grows up with his friend Murli, and the pair are caught stealing from a train by a corrupt police officer, Chewte, who brutally beats Ram Jaane in jail, though he is released without charges. Years later, Ram Jaane ends up working for Sameer Sanwla, who treats him like a son.

That uneasy balance in Ram Jaane’s life shatters when Chewte, now promoted, murders Sameer Sanwla. In a bid for revenge, Ram Jaane attempts to kill Chewte, but the confrontation lands him back behind bars, where he suffers another brutal assault. The cycle of violence seems unbreakable, and Ram Jaane remains trapped between his street instincts and a growing craving for something that looks like reform.

Upon release, Murli leads him to Apna Ghar, a home for homeless youths, where he is unexpectedly reunited with his childhood love Bela. Yet even in this refuge, Ram Jaane’s criminal aura continues to ripple through the group, swaying the boys toward old habits and old fights. Apna Ghar soon becomes a target of Baweja, a ruthless rival with a vendetta against Ram Jaane. Baweja orders his gang to attack the home, and Ram Jaane rises to defend it, ultimately shooting Baweja in the head to end the threat.

The death of Baweja reaches Chewte, who arrives to tighten his grip on the situation. A brutal confrontation erupts, and Chewte’s team assaults the residence, while one child is killed in the ensuing riot. Murli blames Ram Jaane for the tragedy, and, overwhelmed by the mounting chaos, Ram Jaane runs away. He attempts to take Bela with him, believing she loves him, but she declines. Bela’s heart, however, remains torn, secretly leaning toward Murli, who has his own quiet hopes for Ram Jaane’s redemption. Ram Jaane’s rival, the flamboyant Bhau, along with his partner in crime, the showy Pannu Technicolor, hatch a plan to kill Ram Jaane, a plot that Ram Jaane uncovers and defeats by eliminating them both. When Chewte finally arrives on the scene, Ram Jaane shoots him as payback for years of cruelty.

The drama moves to the courtroom, where Ram Jaane confesses to all his crimes, and the judge hands down a death sentence. The boys of Apna Ghar watch with a mix of awe and fear, seeing in him a dangerous yet captivating figure they might imitate. Murli pleads with Ram Jaane not to meet death with bravado, but Ram Jaane accepts his fate. On the day of his execution, he pretends to fear, tears in his eyes, begging for mercy. One by one, the Red headbands the boys wear—symbols of Ram Jaane’s gang—come off, signaling a fragile pivot away from his influence. After his death, Bela and Murli read a letter Ram Jaane left for Bela, in which he expresses guilt for everything he did and reveals that he had intended for Bela to leave him and return to Murli.
