Michael Clayton, played by George Clooney, is an adept “fixer” at a prestigious law firm in New York City, leveraging his network and expertise in legal loopholes to assist his clients. One fateful night, after a high-stakes underground poker game and managing a client’s hit-and-run incident, Michael finds himself driving aimlessly until he pulls over to admire some horses in a secluded field—only to have his car explode behind him in a shocking turn of events.
To understand the backstory, we rewind four days to Milwaukee, where one of the firm’s top lawyers, Tom Wilkinson, portrays Arthur Edens, who disrupts a deposition related to a class action lawsuit against U-North, a powerful agricultural conglomerate. Michael hurriedly heads to Milwaukee to bail Arthur out of jail, but during the night, Arthur mysteriously disappears from their hotel room. Meanwhile, Tilda Swinton, who plays Karen Crowder, U-North’s general counsel, becomes aware of Arthur’s possession of a sensitive document that reveals the company’s knowledge of the carcinogenic properties of a weed killer they manufactured. In a chilling move, she hires two men to monitor Arthur and set up surveillance in his apartment.
As the plot thickens, it becomes clear that Arthur is preparing to expose his own company’s misdeeds. To silence him, Karen gives the order to have him “permanently incapacitated.” Tragically, Arthur’s death is disguised to appear as though it were of natural causes. Michael, grief-stricken by the loss of his colleague, becomes increasingly suspicious when he learns of U-North’s settlement talks just days prior to Arthur’s death. In a desperate search for answers, he connects with a plaintiff named Anna, played by Merritt Wever, who reveals that she had confidential discussions with Arthur, raising even more red flags for Michael.
With the help of his brother Gene in the police department, Michael gains access to Arthur’s apartment, where he discovers a receipt indicating Arthur had made thousands of copies of the incriminating U-North document. As Michael attempts to use this evidence to confront his firm, he finds himself in a life-threatening situation; one of the two hitmen has rigged his car with a bomb. Just before they can act, Michael’s quick thinking allows him to escape the explosion that was meant to end his life.
In a tense board meeting at U-North, Karen suggests a new settlement proposal. However, Michael is waiting in the shadows, poised with the knowledge of her involvement in Arthur’s assassination. He confronts her, leveraging his possession of the damning copies to demand $10 million in exchange for his silence. Reluctantly, Karen agrees, unaware that Michael has secretly recorded their conversation for the authorities. As he walks away, her shock is palpable when the police arrive to apprehend her, sealing her fate. With a sly grin, Michael hails a cab, handing the driver $50 and simply instructing him to “just drive,” signaling a quiet resolve as he leaves the chaos behind.
