Sensory Experience

Sensory experience benefits from a richly textured soundtrack and competent sound design, though the music is noted as repetitive. Rewatch Factor

Rewatch value is limited; the film’s initial half offers impressive spectacle that can attract a second viewing, but the drawn‑out second half and narrative weaknesses reduce its appeal on repeat watches. Consequently, the movie is viewed as a one‑time visual experience rather than a film that rewards multiple viewings.

In the late 1500s, the Malabar coast of Kerala becomes a chessboard where empire and kingdom maneuver for control. The Portuguese empire forms an uneasy alliance with the kingdom of Kochi to topple the formidable Kozhikode, sparking a clash of ambitions that will reshape the region. The Portuguese commander Alfonso de Noronha, Paul Huntley-Thomas, trains Kochi soldiers to wield firearms and arms them with cannons in exchange for trading rights for crops and spices. Yet the native traders resist the new Cartaz system that stifles their Arab trade, and Kuttiyali Marakkar, Fazil, a well-connected merchant, uncovers ways to keep commerce flowing despite the licenses. His brother-in-law Moidu, aligned with Alfonso, betrays him, deepening the rift between allegiance and personal gain.

In the earlier days, Kuttiyali and his sons — including Pattu Marakkar, Siddique — once commanded the Kozhikode navy and helped resist Portuguese rule. They eventually step back from the frontlines and become merchants after Poker’s death in battle. In the present, Poker’s son Muhammad Ali marries his childhood sweetheart, Aisha, but that night turns tragic: Alfonso’s raid wipes out Aisha, Muhammad’s mother, and Kuttiyali. The Kochi king reframes the massacre as a civil tragedy, blaming Muhammad and Pattu, who survive the onslaught. In retaliation, the pair strike back, assassinating Moidu and escaping by raft, only to be shipwrecked in Ponnani, Kozhikode. There, they encounter the kingdom’s military leadership — the brash Achuthan, Ashok Selvan and the kindhearted Anandan, Arjun Sarja — and form a fragile partnership. Muhammad’s defiant stance against Achuthan’s disrespect foreshadows the friction to come, even as Anandan tries to keep the peace. The storm-ravaged survivors receive help from Mangattachan, Hareesh Peradi, who distributes supplies, while Namathu Kurup, Innocent, hoards them for his market and is brutal to Pattu when called out. In response, Muhammad robs Kurup’s cargo with the help of a bandit named Thangudu, Prabhu, and his crew, distributing the loot to civilians and gradually adopting the mantle of Kunjali Marakkar — a protector of the people and a fugitive from the kingdom.

Many years pass, and Marakkar’s guerrilla campaigns against Portuguese ships intensify. During one raid they befriend Chiang, a Chinese slave, and when Chiang’s mother is held hostage, Marakkar’s crew intervenes. Though a tragic accident costs Aimutty his life, Mayinkutty, Manikuttan, witnesses the moment, and a bond forms between Marakkar and Chiang, whom Marakkar affectionately calls “Chinnali.” The alliance is strained when Achuthan’s jealousy grows as Chinnali and Aarcha, the daughter of minister Dharmoth Panicker, Mukesh, fall in love. Aarcha becomes pregnant and escapes with Chinnali, provoking a violent confrontation in which Achuthan appears to be the aggressor. Chinnali is killed by Achuthan, and Aarcha, devastated, takes her own life, while Marakkar, arriving too late, believes Anandan has killed her and slashes Anandan’s throat in a moment of brutal misjudgment.

The court’s politics grow darker as Namathu Kurup’s misdeeds mirror the corruption tearing at Kozhikode from within. A new monarch, Nambyathiri, Arjun Nandhakumar, takes the throne and chooses to bend to Portuguese pressure, aligning with De Gama and the colonial interests. The two powers conspire to crush Marakkar, who refuses to bow, and a siege of his village ensues. Despite valiant defense, Kozhikode’s unity frays, and Marakkar endures the loss of many followers as De Gama pushes for a brutal tactic — killing prisoners daily to break resistance. Pattu, among those executed early, bears the weight of the kingdom’s guilt as De Gama’s men press on.

Marakkar engineers a dramatic jailbreak, abducting De Gama in a bid to force the release of prisoners, but he falls into a trap laid by Achuthan and Subaida, Manju Warrier, the wife of Aimutty. She regrets her choices when Marakkar seeks mercy, but it comes too late. Marakkar is captured by De Gama’s forces and taken to Velha, Goa, where he faces a verdict that seals his fate: a death by guillotine after he refuses to beg for mercy. The epic, on a somber note, closes with Marakkar’s final homage to his mother as he joins her in the afterlife, a symbol of endurance and resistance that outlives the battles and betrayals that defined his era.

In the end, the legacy of the Kunjali Marakkar IV Mohanlal remains a testament to courage and sacrifice, etched in the memory of those who fought to protect their people against overwhelming odds. The tale interweaves political intrigue, maritime warfare, personal loss, and a stubborn insistence on dignity amid tyranny, leaving a lasting impression of a hero who refused to abandon his oath to the land and its people. The drama is anchored by a large ensemble cast, with standout performances that give texture to a history often told in broad strokes, inviting viewers to revisit a pivotal chapter from the margins of history and the heart of its people.
