After a decade in West Germany, Max returns to Leningrad to see his terminally ill father. He befriends a mysterious man named Igor and begins a romance with Lena, a deaf‑mute woman. Through Max’s ties to his father, Igor and Lena, loosely linked vignettes sketch a layered portrait of the city and its residents, portraying Leningrad as both familiar and alien, rendered with lyrical imagery and editing.
