Ray Tuckby, Dylan Walsh, is a decent guy living a quiet, routine life in Trona, California. After discovering his wife has had an affair with his brother Michael Hitchcock Mark, and learning that his son Eddie Tuckby Jonah Hill is actually Mark’s son, he decides to start over and reinvent everything.
Ray’s world is shaken further when his mother June Squibb and his sister die after a bitter clash over their mother’s secret lemon meringue pie recipe. In the aftermath, the mother’s lawyer delivers Ray a share of the legacy, including the recipe, which he initially passes along to Eddie for college expenses. Eddie, however, reveals he is already involved with Dirk, a local teenage meth baron Will Rothhaar who is pulling him into a dangerous world.
A turning point comes when Ray meets Merl Danny DeVito, the new Chevron gas station operator in town. Merl’s presence nudges Ray to dream again and see a life beyond the grind. He musters the courage to pursue his childhood love, Nora Tracy Middendorf, and discovers that their small town harbors the possibility of a fresh start.
When Dirk shuts down the town’s electricity and water, Ray and his neighbors rally to take their community back. The plan culminates in Dirk’s defeat and a return of local control. Ray then marries Nora and, with her, opens a restaurant that features his mother’s lemon meringue pie as the signature dish. Eddie works as Ray’s chef, while Spoonie Justin Long, Denny Brad Hunt, and Denny’s wife help out as waiters. The story closes on a hopeful note, with Nora shown to be expecting a baby, signaling a new chapter for the town and its people.
