In Kalimpong, North West Bengal, Maya D’Souza is a single mother who runs a small cafeteria, trying to keep life steady for her teenage daughter Tara. Next door, a reclusive yet brilliant mathematics teacher, Naren Vyas, quietly quietly moves through his days. Though he keeps to himself, his students hold him in high regard, and his morning exchanges with Maya at her cafe—where he buys lunch—are the brightest part of his routine.

One night, Maya’s abusive estranged husband, Ajit Mhatre, a corrupt policeman, returns with an extortion scheme. He pressures Maya for money with threats against her and Tara, a situation that spirals into violence. In a desperate struggle, Ajit is killed by them by strangulation. After the commotion is overheard, Naren Vyas steps forward to help, not only disposing of the body but also laying out a step-by-step plan to cover up what happened.

Enter Inspector Karan Anand, a former classmate of Naren, who is assigned to locate the missing Ajit. His investigation pushes him to Kalimpong, where he encounters Naren and discovers burned remains bearing Ajit’s credentials. The mounting evidence makes him lean toward Maya, and the autopsy confirms the murder occurred on the 10th. Maya and Tara have credible alibis, yet one of Maya’s employees hints at a crush Naren supposedly has on Maya, sowing seeds of doubt in Karan’s mind about Naren’s involvement. Nadine’s suspicions deepen when incriminating material about Naren surfaces and he lacks a solid alibi for the night in question.

Maya apologizes when she learns what the employee revealed, insisting there is nothing romantic between them. A heartbroken Naren goes to the police and confesses to Ajit’s murder, presenting himself as acting at Maya’s bidding. He begins to frame himself as delusional, creating misleading evidence that he stalked Maya, and the murder weapon is later found at his home. Convinced, Karan accepts that Naren killed Ajit in a delusional state to shield Maya.

At the police station, Maya asks why he took the blame. Naren then reveals a staggering truth: he had spent ten years trying to solve one Millennium Prize Problem, a breakthrough he believed would define his life. Yet someone else had reached the solution 46 hours before him. In despair, he contemplated suicide until Maya appeared at his door, giving him a new chance at life. She even offers to visit him in prison, but Naren declines, wishing for Maya and Tara to move on peacefully.

A flashback fills in how Naren orchestrated the cover-up. Ajit’s murder happened on the 9th, and Maya had no alibi for that day; to craft a plausible alibi, Naren killed a homeless man on the 10th, altering the body and the scene to mislead investigators. Karan had already noted that the burned remains bore a smashed face and burned fingerprints, a deliberate attempt to sever the body from Ajit’s identity. In truth, this was done to ensure no one would realize the corpse wasn’t Ajit’s.

Ultimately, Naren is sentenced to 25 years in prison, a sentence he uses to continue pursuing a Millennium Prize Problem, turning his time behind bars into a different kind of pursuit and achievement. The film weaves a story of quiet intellect, desperate protection, and the prices paid when love, guilt, and genius collide.
