Kabir [Kunal Kapoor] is a famous writer who, in disguise, kills drug dealer Vicky Singhania [Viraf Patel] at the discotheque EGO, narrowly evading a raid by the police. The high-stakes moment kicks off a chain of troubles as his career stalls and a court orders him to deliver the second half of his bestseller within three months to his publisher Rashmi [Vidya Malvade], his ex-wife who runs the publishing house and has taken most of his wealth in alimony.

Rashmi, convinced Kabir is writing for someone else, hires detective Ricky Rosario [Karim Hajee] to uncover the truth. Bound by a contract that forbids him from switching publishers, Kabir continues ghostwriting the enigmatic Zaran Khan series, a detail Rashmi’s team believes is being concealed from them. In Panchgani, Kabir forms an uneasy friendship with Suhana [Amyra Dastur], a resort receptionist whose warmth clashes with the storm of his legal and professional woes. Ricky, meanwhile, bribes the gardener’s daughter Bindia to break into Kabir’s home, locating a hidden laptop and confirming Kabir’s ghostwriting. Rather than report back to Rashmi, Ricky tries to blackmail Kabir, demanding triple Rashmi’s pay.

Kabir confides in Suhana, who proposes a plan to frame Ricky as the ghostwriter, but Ricky stands his ground. That night, Ricky is found murdered on the highway, making Kabir the prime suspect, while Suhana provides him with a false alibi. Later, Suhana visits Ricky’s photographer friend and witnesses a separate murder by a mysterious man who threatens her. At the crime scene, she recovers a lost hair clip, a small clue that deepens the mystery. An investigating officer discovers Kabir’s secret room but lacks decisive evidence to arrest him.

Kabir reveals he’s already resolved the legal issue by backdating contracts and outing himself as Zaran Khan on his blog, a move that ties together the public and private personas in troubling ways. Suhana opens up about a traumatic past—witnessing her father kill her family, then killing her father herself, an act that led to a schizophrenia diagnosis. She identifies Dr. Rao [Atul Kulkarni] from St. Paul’s mental asylum in Bangalore as the second possible killer, a doctor she fled after an assault. In a tense confrontation, Suhana dies after grabbing a gun, and Kabir discloses that she took her own life. The deaths are connected to her untreated condition, a thread that ties the night’s events to the broader moral questions at the heart of Kabir’s fiction.

Suhana surrenders and begins recovering at St. Paul’s, with Kabir visiting daily. The charges against her are dropped, but the investigating officer remains wary, noting how the real murders echo the honesty and danger found in Kabir’s Zaran Khan novels, leaving a haunting implication that the two of them could become a perilous alliance. Dr. Rao is dismissive of these concerns, yet the investigator vows to continue watching the pattern unfold.
