Will Kane, now a private citizen living with his family, returns to Hadleyville one year after the events of High Noon to attend to some business. Will Kane Lee Majors comes back to a town under the thumb of J.D. Ward Pernell Roberts, a corrupt marshal who allows his deputies to brutalize the citizens. Ward even shows his contempt by shooting the horses he had bought, knowing Kane cannot act against him. Nearby, the old conflict lingers as the deputy Harlan Tyler Tracey Walter remains a looming presence in town affairs.
Kane learns that Ward has organized a manhunt for outlaw Ben Irons David Carradine and his men to collect a large bounty, despite the fact that none of them have committed any crime and Ward is thus operating outside his authority. Disgusted by the abuse of power, Kane recalls a long-standing friendship with Irons that goes back to his own days as marshal, and this memory compels him to help Irons slip away from the law.
From this point, Kane acts on principle, attempting to shield Irons from capture. Yet, despite his efforts, Irons is shot and killed, a brutal turn that tests Kane’s resolve and loyalty to the town he once served.
Ward tries to have Kane arrested for aiding a fugitive, but the townspeople, who had previously tolerated Ward’s misdeeds, turn their backs on him. The local authorities reinstate Kane as marshal and issue him a warrant to jail Ward, a moment of public vindication after Ward’s overreach.
Kane accepts the symbolic old marshal’s star he had discarded at the end of the first film, and when Ward resists arrest, Kane ends the corrupt marshal’s reign with a decisive confrontation.
The story closes on a hopeful note as Kane shares a tender moment with his wife Amy Kane Katherine Cannon and is celebrated by the townspeople who are finally grateful for his stand against tyranny.
