In 1953 Bandung, Ainun Besari is paired by a teacher with the exceptionally bright Rudy Habibie, and the pair quickly discovers a mutual respect that blossoms into a deep, enduring affection. Rudy’s ambition to transform Indonesia through science and engineering becomes a guiding light for both of them, and their bond grows stronger as they marry and set off for Aachen, where he plans to finish his studies and return to his homeland as a changed man.

In Europe, Rudy takes a job at a train company while Ainun faces the practicalities of early parenthood. Their first son, Ilham Akbar Habibie, arrives during their time in Hamburg, a moment that solidifies their partnership. With a Doctor of Engineering now in hand, Rudy pitches an Indonesian-made aircraft to the Indonesian Aircraft Industry Command, though the venture is met with hesitation. To buoy his spirits, Ainun reveals they are also expecting a second child, Thareq Kemal Habibie, even as she secretly battles ovarian cancer. She returns to the hospital as a physician, balancing medical care with unwavering support for Rudy as he pursues his goals.

Back in Indonesia, Ibnu Sutowo lends crucial support, assembling an engineering team as Rudy’s star rises. He becomes a cabinet minister, guiding projects that aim to place Indonesia at the forefront of technology. Rudy’s blueprint for the IPTN N-250 gains approval from President Suharto, and manufacturing begins even as public sentiment remains cautious. The aircraft’s maiden flight on 10 August 1995 earns praise from locals and the press, signaling a hopeful moment for Indonesian innovation.

Despite the triumph, life pressures mount. Ainun asks for a honeymoon, but Rudy’s oath as Vice President imposes a demanding schedule that leaves them sleep-deprived. The 1997 Asian financial crisis and the May 1998 riots culminate in Suharto’s resignation, and Rudy ascends to the presidency. The Reform era brings criticism and accusations of corruption directed at him, even as Ainun quietly copes with her worsening cancer. She hides her illness while continuing to support her husband, and after a year in office, Rudy realizes the toll of the presidency and resigns. The N-250 project is abandoned in the wake of the crisis, and the couple’s dream of local mobility fades as public interest wanes. Still, they manage a bittersweet honeymoon together.

As the health crisis deepens, Rudy learns that Ainun’s cancer has reached Stage IV. They travel to Munich, where Ainun receives care at Universitätsklinikum Großhadern. Surgery offers a measure of hope, but the disease persists, and doctors cannot guarantee a cure. With Ainun’s funeral planned by close friends, Rudy faces the impending farewell with a heavy heart. Ainun passes away on 22 May 2010, leaving Rudy to return to her home and replay memories in his mind. The film closes with a quiet, moving scene: an elderly Habibie visits Ainun’s grave, a testament to a life shared in love, learning, and a shared dream for a brighter Indonesia.
