Bu, [Shu Qi], a beautiful young woman from a small Taiwanese fishing village, discovers a romantic message in a bottle and travels to Hong Kong to find its writer. She soon learns the note was written by Albert, [Tony Leung], a lonely gay man, and her quest pulls her into a surprising romance with C.N. Chan, [Jackie Chan], a wealthy recycling company owner. The two fall in love, but their relationship quickly becomes entangled in a sharp, older rivalry between Howie Lo, [Emil Chau], and C.N.—two childhood friends whose paths cross again as they push each other toward power and prestige in the business world.
As Bu’s feelings deepen, the narrative widens to explore how three lives intersect: the ambitious rivalries between Howie Lo and C.N., and the fragile hope Bu brings to both men. The story threads together themes of desire, loyalty, and the complications of love that can bloom across very different worlds—from a quiet village to a glittering urban epicenter.
In the English-dubbed version, several dialogues are altered and a few scenes are edited out to fit the adaptation. One airport sequence shows Sandra Ng Kwan Yue and Sam Lee as airport pickpockets who con Long Yi, played by Richie Jen, who is supposedly Bu’s fiancé. Another moment follows as Stephen Chow—the policeman with a dog—arrives to investigate after C.N. fights off Howie Lo’s masked goons and Albert’s friends who pretend to be gangsters attacking Bu, who is meanwhile pretending to be the missing girlfriend of a Taiwan gangster leader.
