Fred [Chow Yun-Fat], a crude and outspoken car repairer, works at a crowded garage alongside his two closest friends, Tony [Natalis Chan] and Silver [Eric Tsang Chi-Wai]. The shop boss, Ken [Stanley Fung Shui-Fan], places friendship with the trio above all else, even as his own sharp, calculating, and sometimes gruff demeanor complicates office life. Tony and Silver can’t stomach the snobbish tendencies of Fred’s girlfriend Ah Man [Sharla Cheung Man], and their friction comes to a head at Ah Man’s birthday banquet, ultimately forcing Fred to break things off with her.
To lift Fred out of heartbreak, Ken schemes to cheer him up with a tour to Penang. On the sunlit beach, the trio spots two striking women, Maggie [Maggie Cheung] and Agnes, strolling as if they belong to a different world. A playful poker game decides which man will court which woman, and fate tilts in Fred’s favor, making Maggie the focal point of his affections. After their return, Maggie and Fred keep in touch, and the spark between them lingers.
One evening, Fred invites Maggie to a ball, and she finds herself drawn to a wealthy bachelor, Chiu Ting-Sin [Stuart Yung Sai-Kit]. Fred cannot bear Chiu’s fawning behavior toward Maggie and deliberately stirs trouble, which sours the relationship between him and the suitor. Chiu retaliates by pulling Maggie and Agnes into commercial shoots and even sends his car to Fred’s garage to expose Fred’s everyday life as a car repairer, hoping to undermine him. Maggie feels deceived and grows distant, her trust shaken by the staged encounters.
Chiu’s next move is more ambitious: he plans an in-house party to welcome Maggie and Agnes as guests, leveraging the event to humiliate Fred and his friends. The plan goes awry when Fred and his crew are suddenly accused of drug storage and end up imprisoned. Learning of Chiu’s real scheme, Fred and his friends improvise a daring rescue operation to penetrate the party and save Maggie and Agnes from the trap. As the truth emerges, Maggie discovers Chiu’s ulterior motives, and she ends the relationship with him, embracing Fred’s sincere confession and apology. In the end, the couple’s reconciliation leads to marriage, cementing a hard-won, hopeful future together.
