In a kingdom still haunted by the memory of a beloved queen, the king, Jean Marais, swears to remarry only a woman as beautiful and virtuous as his late wife. Faced with pressure from his advisers to remarry quickly and produce an heir, he begins to fear that his pledge cannot be kept without crossing a terrible line. After the queen’s death, the king’s resolve sets him on a path that will test family bonds, moral boundaries, and the very idea of virtue. The princess, camouflaged by fate and guided by her godmother, the lilac fairy Delphine Seyrig, tries to outwit the arrangement by demanding a string of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts. Each request grows more fantastical, demanding colors and secrets that would make any ordinary court blush with envy. Yet the king, determined to honor his vow, manages to deliver gifts that are as magical as they are perilous: robes dyed in the hues of the weather, the moon, and the sun, and finally the skin of a magical donkey that excretes jewels—the source of the kingdom’s wealth.
Donning the enchanted donkey skin, the princess flees her father’s kingdom to escape an incestuous fate and disappears into a shadowed world beyond the castle walls. In this new life, she takes up work as a pig keeper in a nearby realm, where the days are simple but the nights are filled with quiet fear and the ever-present sense of being watched. It is there, among the wooden huts and the scent of livestock, that a prince from the neighboring kingdom notices her, drawn to a quiet strength he senses beneath her roughened exterior. The prince, Jacques Perrin, falls deeply in love, and his first act of courage is to fall ill, trusting that the mysterious “Donkey Skin” can heal him. He requests that she bake him a cake, a simple act that, unknown to him, will carry a fateful sign of recognition.
Within the cake, a ring shoots forth a glimmer that the prince discovers as he takes a bite, a sign that the woman who loves him has hidden a piece of her heart inside a sweet treat. From that moment, he proclaims that he will wed the woman whose finger fits the ring. News of the ring spreads like a bright flame through the courts, and a grand assembly is convened in the prince’s castle. Women of every rank—noble and humble, high-born and lowly—try on the ring, each hoping to claim a wedding fate. One by one, the ring slips away or refuses to fit, until at last the lowly Donkey Skin appears, the princess herself, standing in for the unknown bride. When the ring slides neatly onto her finger, her true identity is suddenly laid bare before the astonished crowd, and a collective gasp runs through the hall.
The revelation does not end the tale in silence. It is a moment of fragile triumph, because the law of the court, the memory of the queen, and the dream of the little girl who fled the palace all collide in a single, dazzling instant. The wedding ceremony begins, but the story takes an even more wondrous turn: the lilac fairy and the king arrive not to condemn, but to claim their own places within this strange union. In a ceremonial flourish that merges magic and monarchy, they arrive by helicopter, declaring that they, too, are to be married to share in the newly forged happiness. What starts as a desperate ploy to escape a grim fate ends in an improbable, lyrical embrace of love, justice, and the unshakable belief that virtue can be found in the most unlikely of faces.
