In a kingdom still haunted by the memory of a beloved queen, the king, Jean Marais, swears to remarry only a woman as beautiful and virtuous as his late wife. Faced with pressure from his advisers to remarry quickly and produce an heir, he begins to fear that his pledge cannot be kept without crossing a terrible line. After the queen’s death, the king’s resolve sets him on a path that will test family bonds, moral boundaries, and the very idea of virtue. The princess, camouflaged by fate and guided by her godmother, the lilac fairy Delphine Seyrig, tries to outwit the arrangement by demanding a string of seemingly impossible nuptial gifts.
