The film opens with a sea storm that sinks a ship, leaving a child as the sole survivor. In another scene, a king waits for his grandchild; he dies still waiting but leaves his property to that grandchild, Shankar Dilip Kumar.

Thakur, a kindhearted, widowed landlord, lives a wealthy lifestyle with his son Pran Sikand Ramesh, daughter Waheeda Rehman Roopa, and an adopted child, Shankar. From the start, Ramesh openly hates Shankar and treats him with harshness and contempt.

Years pass. Thakur dies, and a grown-up Ramesh frequents a beautiful courtesan, drinks, and continues to abuse and mercilessly beat Shankar, who bears it in silence. Meanwhile, Roopa and Shankar have fallen in love, their bond growing quietly through shared moments and trust, even as danger lingers in the shadows of the household.

When Ramesh discovers the romance, he unleashes a cruel turn of events: he has Shankar severely beaten and thrown off a cliff. He then arranges Roopa’s marriage to the wealthy Satish Rehman, while he keeps pursuing the courtesan Tara Bai (Rani) and signs over his entire estate and home to her, severing his ties to the life he once led.

A few years later, Shankar returns as the wealthy king of Belapur, his transformation evident in both demeanor and power. He is ready to compromise with Ramesh and even propose to Roopa, but he discovers that nothing has changed; Ramesh, though rendered penniless by Tara, still harbors hatred for Shankar.

Satish is now engaged to Roopa, with a marriage date fixed, adding another layer to the tangle of loyalties and desires. Shankar’s ambitions shift from romance to revenge, and he begins to lay out plans to disrupt the lives of Ramesh, Roopa, Satish, and his sister Mala Shyama. In the shadows of wealth and vendetta, old wounds reopen, loyalties blur, and the battle lines are drawn as the characters navigate a world where love, power, and vengeance collide.
