Detective Conan: Crossroad in the Ancient Capital 2003

A string of brutal murders sweeps across Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, with five men killed in ritual fashion using traditional weapons like swords and bows. The killer is described as wearing a Noh mask portraying an elderly man, lending a eerie, ceremonial aura to the crimes. Investigations run in parallel across the three cities, revealing that the victims are all members of Genji Hotaru, a thieves’ ring obsessed with antique art. The group’s remaining known leaders—Yoshitsune, Benkei, and Ise Saburo—evade identification, their true identities still shrouded in mystery.

At the heart of the case, Kogoro Mouri travels to Kyoto with Conan Edogawa at the request of Ryuen, a monk from Sannoji Temple. Eight years prior, a secret Buddhist statue known as the Medicine Buddha—revealed only once every twelve years—was stolen, and a recent cryptic drawing has appeared, hinting at the statue’s location. The journey to Sannoji Temple brings them into contact with a diverse cast: Enkai, an antique art dealer who supports the temple; Sakura Shozo, a temple patron; Mizuo Harutaro, a Noh actor; and Taiga Saijo, a used bookstore owner. As they comb through clues connected to the cryptic drawing, Conan heads to the Gojo Bridge, a site steeped in legend about Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Musashibo Benkei, and there he meets Heiji Hattori, who is independently pursuing the Genji Hotaru murders. Heiji shares memories of a first love—an encounter eight years earlier, a girl in a kimono singing a temari uta at a temple—and shows a crystal ball he has carried as a keepsake ever since.

The duo’s investigation leads them to Mount Kurama, where an unseen assailant in a motorcycle suit attacks them with a bow and arrow. That very night, Sakura Shozo is murdered at a teahouse in Ponto-chō, and soon after, Heiji is attacked again while escorting Kazuha Tooyama home. The attacker challenges Heiji to a duel with wooden swords, and Heiji is severely injured and hospitalized, pushing Conan into the foreground of the struggle and heightening the stakes for everyone involved.

Conan eventually deciphers the cryptic drawing and confirms that the Medicine Buddha is concealed at Bukkoji Temple. When Heiji arrives at the temple, a phone call from the culprit reveals that Kazuha Tooyama has been kidnapped and that Heiji must come to Gyokuryu Temple on Mount Kurama. At Gyokuryu Temple, the confrontation climaxes as the culprit is unmasked as Taiga Saijo. Saijo orders his disciples to attack, but a man disguised as Heiji intervenes, later revealed to be Shinichi Kudo in disguise. The real Heiji soon joins the fight, giving Kazuha Tooyama a chance to slip away with him into a secluded room of the temple. There, Heiji discovers that the legendary sword Muramasa lies hidden inside a chest of drawers and uses the temari uta sung by Kazuha Tooyama to pinpoint its location, challenging Saijo to a final, decisive duel.

Meanwhile, Shinichi Kudo briefly reunites with Ran Mouri before reverting to Conan Edogawa, and Conan lends crucial aid to Heiji as the battle unfolds, disarming Saijo, who wields two swords—one of them coated with deadly poison—and ultimately bringing the caper to a close. The next day, Kazuha Tooyama sings the temari uta again, and Heiji notices a discrepancy in the lyrics that confirms the long-simmering truth: Kazuha is the same girl he met eight years earlier, sealing his first love in memory. In a parallel turning point, Ran observes sweat stains on her handkerchief from her encounter with Shinichi, convincing her that the reunion she dreamed of is real.
