In an unnamed South American nation, a prisoner escapes into the jungle, only to be struck by an unseen assailant whose attack leaves much of his face torn away. The harsh, enveloping jungle sets a tense stage for the story to unfold.
Anthropologist Evelyn Howard Deborah Raffin decides to search for her missing colleague Dr. Eslinger, who vanished while chasing the rumors of the Duende—a a rumored tribe of dwarfish, winged reptiloids (reptile-like people). To reach the dangerous interior, she hires an alcoholic helicopter pilot, Harry Bediker Peter Fonda, to fly her into the heart of the jungle. The mission is not just professional curiosity but a race against time and danger, wrapped in a search for truth about the mysterious tribe.
A local shaman John Amos warns the unlikely pair to steer clear of the Killing Place, the tribe’s legendary home and a place spoken of in hushed tones. His warning threads through the journey like a cautionary omen, foreshadowing the peril that lies ahead and the possibility that legends may conceal deadly realities rather than mere myths.
Their fragile expedition takes a brutal turn when someone shoots at the helicopter, severing its fuel line and forcing an emergency landing deep in the jungle. They soon discover they have crash-landed near a fortress-like trading post run by Luis Venchito Galvez and Maria Iliang Vitales. The post becomes a precarious ground for their tense cooperation and uneasy alliances, a liminal space where survival hinges on trust, wit, and scraps of information.
Inside the trading post, Evelyn and Harry clash repeatedly, their bickering reflecting clashing worldviews as they debate practical concerns—most notably whether the vast stores of cooking oil could double as helicopter fuel. The post also serves as a repository for clues: Dr. Eslinger’s diaries, left behind, suggest that the reptiloids are hostile. Yet Evelyn clings to a stubborn belief that the creatures may not be as hostile as the diaries imply, a tension that drives the narrative forward and keeps the question of danger in constant play.
As the story unfolds, the tension between science and superstition, skepticism and belief, tightens. Evelyn’s resolve to uncover the truth about the Duende is matched by Harry’s reluctance and reluctant courage, a dynamic that keeps their precarious partnership alive even as the jungle presses in with its own cryptic logic. Ultimately, the weight of Eslinger’s warnings proves prescient, and Harry must face the peril head-on to rescue Evelyn before the looming threat claims her life. The film weaves danger, myth, and human stubbornness into a taut, atmospheric adventure that questions what lies beyond the edge of maps and the reach of reason.
