On September 22, 1927, Dempsey and Tunney meet again in one of boxing’s most talked-about showdowns. Dempsey knocks Tunney down, but the count doesn’t start until Dempsey returns to a neutral corner, giving Tunney time to recover and rise just before the count hits the dreaded nine. In this famous “long count” fight, Gene Tunney wins by decision, ending a chapter in Dempsey’s storied career and leaving a legacy that fans remember for years to come.
