John Brickner is released on parole after serving four of seven years for second-degree manslaughter and moves to Seattle, where he balances a daytime job as a construction worker with a nightly gig as a bar bouncer. In this new chapter, he encounters Veronica Reynolds, the widow of the man he killed in self-defense, who reveals that she petitioned for his release through a long trail of apology letters and lays bare a wrenching burden: her eight-year-old daughter Sarah is in need of a heart transplant, and the operation carries a staggering price of US$250,000.
