A young man, Stefano Mattioli, freshly finished with college, tells his publisher father, Leonardo Mattioli, that he wants to devote his life to the priesthood. The father, who has his own plans for his son to take over the family business, resists this idea with a rigid practicality. To test a middle ground, he proposes a luxurious yacht trip that would let them spend a few days together, hoping the sea air might sway Stefano. Unbeknownst to Stefano, the father also brings along his mistress, a fact kept hidden from his son.
