Set largely against the bustling cultural backdrop of Warsaw and Paris, this film traces the life of Frédéric Chopin from a gifted, young pianist in Warsaw, where he lives with his parents and two sisters, to a celebrated composer navigating a demanding romance abroad. In his early years, Chopin frequently plays the piano and creates music for the rather unmusical Grand Duke Constantine, all while his father urges him to seek a broader future in Paris. With that invitation, he leaves home just before the looming November Uprising, stepping into a city that will shape his art and his heart.
In Paris, he encounters the novelist George Sand, who has just separated from her violent lover Félicien Mallefille. Though an immediate spark draws Chopin to Sand, he initially resists her advances. Over several months, their mutual friend Albert encourages him to open up and get to know George Sand better, and a passionate, complicated romance begins to unfold. As their affair deepens, Chopin faces a cruel blow to his health: he is diagnosed with tuberculosis, a condition that gradually erodes his strength even as his artistry grows more intense. This illness threads through the relationship, coloring every moment with a sense of urgency and fragility.
The romance is complicated further by the presence of George Sand’s two children, Maurice and Solange. Maurice’s near-hysterical hostility toward Chopin escalates tension within the household, creating a volatile dynamic that tests everyone involved. Solange, in contrast, develops an obsessive yet tender attachment to Chopin, a fixation that stirs ongoing rivalry between Solange and her mother. The clash between love, jealousy, and loyalty weaves a portrait of a family pulled in conflicting directions by passion and pain.
Years of conflict between Chopin, Sand, and the children finally begin to resolve into a painful, inevitable end. As the romance dissolves, Chopin calls for one of his sisters to come to his side in his final days, seeking the familial support he has long relied upon. The film closes on a contemplative note, highlighting how art, illness, and intimate bonds intersect in a life marked by genius and vulnerability.
Throughout, the story balances intimate, quiet moments with the broader social world of salons and cultural exchange, portraying how Chopin’s music becomes a distinct voice for his inner life even as his physical health wanes. The film stays true to its emotional core, offering a nuanced, human-scale look at a man whose artistry is inseparable from the love he finds, the challenges he endures, and the eventual, solitary finish of his days.
