Anna Constantia von Brockdorff — known at court as the Countess Cosel — emerges as a luminous yet controversial figure amid the glitter and intrigue of 18th-century Dresden. In 1704, she arrives at the court of Augustus II, the powerful King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, a German noblewoman whose beauty and devout faith captivate the king for a time. The film follows her arrival at age 24, her extraordinary beauty and devout piety, and her ten-year reign as the king’s mistress—a relationship she enters with the belief that the king loves her and intends to marry, a vow she secures in writing during their courtship.

Yet the romance is not valued by the king, who, true to his pattern, moves on to new favorites as soon as the novelty fades. Anna Cosel clings to the idea of the promised marriage and resists relinquishing the promissory note, a stubborn act that provokes Augustus’s anger and seals a brutal turn in her life. As Cosel’s presence at court becomes more noticeable, whispers circulate about the king’s secret promise of marriage, casting her into a perilous spotlight.

The tension deepens when Cosel learns of the monarch’s affair with Countess Maria Magdalena von Dönhoff of Warsaw. Distraught but steadfast, she travels to Warsaw to win back his affection, only to be turned away at the gates. With the king’s feelings seemingly exhausted, he orders her confinement to Stolpen fortress. There, she endures a harsh and lengthy confinement that lasts for almost forty-nine years.

In the years that follow, Cosel’s resolve does not waver. Even after Augustus’s death, she remains imprisoned, and her life becomes a testament to endurance, grace, and an unbending belief in a past love. She dies in 1765 at the age of eighty-five, still carrying the mark of exceptional beauty that once lit Dresden’s court. The film closes with a portrait of a woman whose outward radiance endured far longer than the relationship that defined her years at court.
