Napoleon Bonaparte, [Charles Boyer], pursues the Countess Marie Walewska, [Greta Garbo], who is married to the older Count Anastas Walewski, [Henry Stephenson]. She resists at first, until she is convinced that giving in could help save Poland. After her husband annuls their marriage and Napoleon divorces the Empress Josephine, the two are free to formalize their relationship, but Napoleon shocks her by announcing his decision to wed the Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria for political reasons. Although he hopes this won’t affect their bond, she leaves him, never telling him that she is carrying his child.

Napoleon is defeated in Russia. On the island of Elba, Marie Walewska brings their child, Alexander, though she does not reveal that Napoleon is the father. She carries a message from Elba that helps Napoleon escape, but he is eventually defeated at Waterloo. She visits him at Rochefort as he faces British captivity and offers to help him flee to America, but he asks what he would do there and says he must follow his star instead. Marie and Alexander watch Napoleon being rowed away to a British ship, and she tells her son that they must pray that Napoleon, following his star, will one day find peace.
