Old-time outlaw Jersey Brady recounts the life of his former partner, the notorious bandit Black Bart.
Years earlier, Lance Hardeen, Jersey, and Black Bart ride the line between crime and escape as Black Bart decides to leave the gang, head west to California, and pull off one last, bold heist that could set him up to go straight. Although Lance tries to trick Black Bart out of his share, the wily outlaw double-crosses him first and walks away with all the loot.
Months later in Sacramento, a new player enters the tale: Clark(/actor/john-mcintire), a former partner who now wields the law as a clever criminal, and he teams with Black Bart to wreck the Wells Fargo bank, aiming to replace it with their own bank and profit from the booming gold rush. Over the next two months, Clark feeds Black Bart tips about every Wells Fargo money shipment, and a disguised Black Bart robs each stage, sowing doubt and eroding trust in the town’s financial lifeblood.
One day, a masked Black Bart stops a coach carrying Lance, Jersey, and the celebrated dancer Lola Montez. Lance recognizes Black Bart’s voice and helps save the coach from his own former partner’s theft. He brings the coach to the bank’s relay station, where Black Bart further impresses Lola by returning her diamond bracelet and sharing a rare, intimate moment before slipping away.
The next day, as they reach Sacramento, Wells Fargo manager Mark Lorimer and Sheriff Gordon hire Lance and Jersey, who are now seen as local heroes, to guard the coach and its precious cargo. Black Bart makes his entrance again in the bar as a respected rancher by day, and he urges a plan to seize Lola together, even as he considers the possibility of leaving crime behind.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Gordon lays out a scheme for Lance to act as lookout for a posse of deputies protecting the incoming stage. The broader plan hinges on a double-cross: if the stage gets through, Clark’s larger scheme will be ruined. Black Bart continues to move through the town as a figure of both admiration and danger, and Lola’s affections complicate his resolve to go straight.
That tension comes to a head when Lola confronts Black Bart with a heartfelt plea to abandon crime for a chance at a normal life. He concedes that one last job might be possible, but Lola’s plea to give up the life leaves him torn between love and loyalty to the old code.
As the night deepens, the plan intensifies. Lance serves as lookout while the others scheme to guard the coach and secure the payoff, while Clark tries to steer events to preserve his own influence. The tension peaks when Black Bart discovers a pivotal truth about the money and the stage’s fate, forcing a dangerous confrontation at the relay station.
A fateful ambush unfolds: Black Bart and Jersey are cornered by a waiting posse in a barn. They escape briefly into the burning structure, but the flames close in, and both are shot in the turmoil. The story ends with Jersey reflecting from his jail cell, declaring he can’t be sure what happened to Lola, and acknowledging that Charles’s death ultimately pushed him toward a straight life.
The tale that Jersey tells is one of ambition, loyalty, and the price of living outside the law, where trust frays at the edges of love and money, and where a dramatic choice between passion and principle can seal a man’s fate for good.
