James Webb arrives in a quiet town carrying a casket filled with books, but he quickly uncovers a web of corruption and violence tied to the town’s power figures. Disguised as a lawyer, Webb discovers that judge Wilson is secretly working with the wanted [O’Hara brothers], led by the ruthless Ramon O’Hara. These brothers are notorious for coercing local farmers into selling their land by force, then murdering them to keep the deeds—often unregistered—under their control in the judge’s possession. Webb’s keen legal knowledge reveals that these deeds, if unregistered, legally belong to the judge if the O’Haras are eliminated, making Webb a potential threat to their criminal plans.

As Webb digs deeper, he learns that the O’Hara gang doesn’t hesitate to resort to deadly violence, suspecting Webb of being an undercover government agent. The gang’s brutality is confirmed when they intercept and kill a government inspector sent to investigate them. When they are denied sufficient protection money, they attack the town, killing the sheriff in a show of dominance and terror. Meanwhile, Burt Collins arrives, seeking his brother Peter, who lives outside town with his Native American wife, Sarah Collins. Burt quickly becomes entangled in the chaos when he kills two of the O’Hara gang members at a saloon where they cheated at gambling, and, with Webb’s guidance, plans to confront the gang.

Burt considers leaving town, but Webb convinces him that he’s a legal sheriff, which quickly turns into a crucial turning point. Despite initial hesitation, Burt accepts the role of sheriff after a confrontation that results in him killing several O’Hara men who challenge him. Webb, meanwhile, manipulates the town’s legal system to make Burt the sheriff, offering a solution that surprises everyone: a 50-50 share of the land rights rather than a trial. However, this fragile peace shatters when the O’Haras surround Burt and his brother, brutally capturing them. Burt is beaten unconscious, and Peter is killed while trying to defend Sarah from an attempted assault. Their home is set ablaze, igniting Burt and Sarah’s thirst for revenge.

Following these tragedies, Burt and Sarah work together to fight back against the O’Hara gang. They gather intelligence from Consuela, a young woman working at the saloon, who provides vital clues. They carry out daring nighttime attacks, killing one of the gang’s members with gunfire and arrows. Using the mine as bait, Burt and Sarah set a trap, capturing and killing the guards—though sadly, Consuela is killed in the crossfire. Their relentless pursuit continues as they infiltrate the O’Hara ranch, using bows, arrows, and cunning tactics to take down the gang members one by one. In a tense confrontation inside a dark room, Burt kills Pedro O’Hara, exposing him and another man when a door opens. Outside, Sarah expertly picks off remaining gang members with her rifle, forcing the gang to abandon their fight, leaving Miguel O’Hara blinded and cursing his enemies.

Meanwhile, Webb, having betrayed the town’s trust, confronts the judge with evidence of his corrupt schemes. The judge offers Webb a share of the illegal deeds, but Webb refuses, leading to a violent showdown. Webb disarms and coerces the judge into signing papers, then kills him and escapes with the loot, only to be intercepted by Sarah. She attempts to capture Webb, but he outsmarts her, ties her up, and escapes.

Burt, arriving back in town with the defeated O’Hara brothers’ bodies, stands face to face with Ramon O’Hara. A dramatic confrontation ensues: Burt shoots Ramon’s rifle from his hands, shoots another defending gang member, and fights Ramon with a hayfork before Webb arrives and shoots down two gang henchmen. Ramon O’Hara reaches for a rifle in a saddle holster, but Webb throws a pistol to Burt, who kills Ramon in a final act of justice. As the townsfolk gather around the fallen gangsters, Webb hands Burt the deeds stolen from Wilson, now exposed. Sarah, having freed herself, arrives with a gun, but Burt, seeking peace, calms her and arrests Webb for the murder of the judge, preparing to take him to court. However, at the junction to Canyon City, Burt secretly sets Webb free, joking, “You fooled me,” revealing that his true motive was to share in the loot rather than land. They part ways, each heading toward their uncertain future, their lives forever intertwined by the violence and justice they fought to restore in the town.
