Two rival towns, East Appleton and West Appleton, settle a tied junior high basketball game by staging a bowling showdown for the coveted trophy known as The Mighty Apple. The outcome of this quirky contest will not only decide the winner but also who gets to name the new school that will rise in the shadow of the old rivalry.

In West Appleton, Kyle Schmid plays Alex Thompson, a capable student with friends Delia Graci Mimi Paley, Elisa Bowers Kaley Cuoco, and Ken Long Joey Wilcots all part of the town’s bowling club. They soon discover that Todd McLemore Robert Ri’chard, a popular basketball star, has joined their ranks as a prank by his buddies Leo and Flip. At a bowling alley run by Kevin Thompson Matt McCoy, Todd reluctantly begins training alongside Alex and the others, but he isn’t shy about criticizing their willingness to win, a stance they interpret as overconfidence.

The dynamic tightens when Alex attends a party with Todd instead of practicing, straining the group. Todd’s bowling begins to show signs of improvement while Alex’s own scores take a dip, hinting at a growing divide between the two camps. Meanwhile, the kids decide to redecorate Kevin’s alley to draw in customers, transforming the space into a more inviting venue. Todd uses his popularity to twist local businesses into donating supplies for what becomes a large, celebratory event—the “Bowling Ball”—that attracts a crowded and buzzing crowd. Delia, Elisa, and Ken exit the party early, feeling betrayed as Alex spends more time with Todd and his entourage.

After the party, Alex overhears Todd’s supposed new friends chatting privately and realizes they are merely pretending to be allies to boost their school’s chances at winning back The Mighty Apple. The situation escalates when Jeff McLemore, Todd’s father and the West Appleton mayor, stages a wager with Mayor Hanburger of East Appleton. The bet is simple but high-stakes: besides the trophy, the winning team will gain the right to name a brand-new school. Mayor Hanburger enlists Whipshaw McGraw [Bill Lake] to train his Bowing team, turning the contest into a full-blown town rivalry.

Back in West Appleton, the team receives low-quality shirts after the wager is announced, and Alex decides to step away from the competition in frustration. Todd makes a concerted push to coax Alex back, presenting fresh shirts with the team’s new name, the Alley Cats, to reignite the group’s momentum. Kevin later opens up to Alex about a long-ago friendship with Jeff and how a past feud cost the city a coveted victory, encouraging his son not to let a personal grudge ruin true friendship.

With renewed resolve, Alex returns to the lineup for the climactic showdown the next day. The final frames bring a twist: Todd’s performance proves fallible, culminating in a challenging 7–10 split that he cannot overcome despite his efforts. In a pivotal turn, Delia steps in for Todd. Drawing on her understanding of physics, she guides a spinner—deliberately and carefully—down the lane to spare, turning the match in a shocking, satisfying victory for West Appleton. The crowd is surprised, yet the moment demonstrates the value of wit and teamwork over raw popularity.

In the aftermath, Todd reflects with his father that it doesn’t seem fair for a school to be named after a game of bowling. The parties reach a compromise, agreeing to name the new school Appleton Central, a decision born from collaboration rather than rivalry. The town gets its closure, and the players learn a lasting lesson about friendship, effort, and the power of collective effort to shape the future.
