As Frank Carver (played by actor) stepped out of the prison gates in 2020, a weighty past followed closely behind. Nineteen long years had passed since Max, the ruthless mob enforcer, ordered his execution of a former ally, with Frank as the unwitting scapegoat. In exchange for a six-year stay in prison and the promise to care for his young son Joey after the tragic loss of Lorraine, Carver took the fall. But fate had other plans; instead of serving out his sentence, he found himself facing a life sentence behind bars.

Upon his release, Frank's health was deemed precarious due to a chronic case of insomnia that threatened to claim his life if left unchecked. As he navigated the unfamiliar world outside, he was confronted by the harsh realities of his son Joey's struggles. The once-young boy had grown into a recovering addict, burdened by debts accumulated from his drug use. Frank's heart heavy with regret and longing for redemption, he vowed to make up for lost time.

Their reunion was marked by a poignant encounter at the old Carver household, where Frank stumbled upon the long-forgotten $450,000 bounty promised to him all those years ago. With Joey's reluctance tempered by his desire to spend quality time with his father, they set out to rectify their past misfortunes. That night, under the lavish lights of a high-end hotel, Frank checked in and defied his doctor's orders, tracking down Q, an old acquaintance who had long since left the underworld behind.

Q, now the proud owner of a successful bar, extended an olive branch to Frank, acknowledging their shared past. The following day, father and son embarked on a journey of rediscovery, indulging in luxuries like tailored suits, high-performance sports cars, and cutting-edge smartphones. However, their newfound normalcy was disrupted by Trip, a cunning pimp who attempted to show them the ropes. Frank's instincts proved more keen than his appetite for adventure, as he politely declined.

Inside the hotel, Joey goaded Frank into flirting with Simone, a mysterious woman who would soon prove to be a prostitute. As they spent the night together in his suite, Frank revealed the terms of his deal with Max and the crushing weight it had placed upon him. In that intimate moment, Simone's affections began to blossom, as she saw beyond Carver's troubled past and into the vulnerable soul beneath.

As night falls, Frank sets his sights on Jimmy, Max's second-in-command, tracking him down to a seedy massage parlor. However, Jimmy proves elusive, managing to slip away just as Frank is about to exact his revenge. The next morning, Frank confides in Joey that he's still entangled in the world of crime, prompting Joey to turn his back on him. Frank's subsequent killing spree includes taking out one of Max's henchmen, Tank, at a local butcher shop. Exhausted and battered, Frank collapses in his hotel suite, only to be confronted by Trip, who claims Simone was once one of his prostitutes and demands compensation from Frank. With a mixture of fear and defiance, Frank threatens Trip, eventually sending him fleeing for his life.

Later, Joey reaches out to Frank, having relapsed into drug use. Frank answers the call, rescuing his friend and reconciling their differences. As they pay their respects at Lorraine's gravesite, Frank also pauses by a headstone bearing Joey's name, revealing that "Joey" was merely a product of his own imagination. This revelation forces Frank to confront the cruel reality: Max had brutally silenced Joey to prevent him from talking. Meanwhile, Joey's spirit continues to plead with his father to return home.

Undeterred by the ghosts of his past, Frank tracks down Max to an assisted living center, where the notorious crime lord has been comatose for 15 years. In a surprising turn, Frank decides to spare Max's life, leaving behind the bloody baseball bat that had been used in the execution of Joey. As he exits the facility, one of the orderlies shares a chilling truth: only Q had visited Max before him, although it's been ages since Q was last seen.

Frank then heads to a nearby church, where Q's daughter is preparing to exchange vows. Frank takes the pair hostage, prompting Q to reveal that he was the one who orchestrated Joey's murder. According to Q, Joey had become a reckless drug addict and was on the verge of betraying Max's gang to the authorities. This prompted Q to take drastic measures to eliminate the problem. Frank spares Q's life but not before his daughter shoots him in the back.

As police close in, Frank refuses to surrender, opting instead for a final, defiant stand. As he lies dying on the church steps, Joey's spirit appears beside him, gently guiding his father into the afterlife.
