Cry Vengeance 1954

In this noir-tinged drama set against the foggy backdrop of San Francisco, Vic Barron is a former cop whose life collapses after a car bombing kills his family. Disfigured, framed, and imprisoned by mobsters he crossed, he surfaces from incarceration with a single, driven purpose: vengeance against the gangster Tino Morelli.

Morelli has holed up in the rugged town of Ketchikan, Alaska, living a shadowed existence. When Barron tracks him down, he also encounters Morelli’s charming young daughter, Marie Morelli, a presence that softens the edge of Barron’s longing for revenge. With the sheltering help of the tavern owner, Peggy Harding, Barron begins to see a different side of life in Alaska’s sweeping vistas and tranquil moments. Harding guides him through the province’s beauty, hoping the fresh air and new scenery might ease his rage and rekindle a sense that life remains worth living.

Barron’s plan darkens as he contemplates kidnapping Marie as leverage, but the girl’s warmth and her innocence in the face of his disfigurement stop him in his tracks. In the same breath, the story pivots: Morelli’s death cools Barron’s original anger, a twist that shifts the emotional landscape and opens the door to a harsher truth.

The danger intensifies as the hitman Roxey Davis closes in, having followed Barron. Roxey murders Morelli, setting off a chain of violence that leaves Barron wounded in a subsequent showdown and Roxey plunging from a dam’s height. In the aftermath, Barron bids farewell to Peggy and to Marie, the orphaned daughter of Morelli, and begins his uneasy journey back to San Francisco, carrying a quiet hint that the door to a possible return remains ajar.
