Jacob Harlon, a prosperous stockbroker in California, leads a seemingly perfect life with his wife, Katherine, and their son, Joshua. However, one fateful night, after an evening out with friends, an unfortunate accident occurs when Jacob drives under the influence, resulting in a tragic collision that takes the life of one of his friends. Facing serious charges, he is compelled to accept a plea deal and is sentenced to 16 months at the California Institution for Men in Chino.
Thrown into the harsh and brutal world of prison, Harlon is initially shocked by the violence surrounding him. When he responds to provocation by attacking an African-American inmate, he catches the attention of Bottles, the “shot caller” of a violent white supremacist gang known as PENI. To gain protection and solidify his standing within the gang, Jacob finds himself coerced into smuggling heroin and tasked with eliminating a “snitch.” As he rises in the ranks, adopting the alias “Money,” he becomes physically imposing, transforming both his appearance and personality due to the hardened prison environment.
In a critical moment during a riot, Jacob risks everything to save the leader of the Sureños by stabbing another inmate, an act that earns him respect but ultimately results in a nine-year extension to his sentence. Stripped of contact with his family, he orders them to move on with their lives without him, as he is transferred to the notorious Corcoran State Prison under maximum security. There, he encounters an inmate known as “The Beast,” the commanding force of the Aryan Brotherhood, and after proving his dedication, he ascends to the role of the Beast’s second-in-command.
As Jacob nears his release after serving over seven years, he is ordered by The Beast to orchestrate a dangerous weapons deal with the Sureños. Faced with the reality of parole, Jacob hesitates, only to be threatened with the safety of his family if he refuses. Once free, he is met by members of the gang, including Howie, a young veteran. After surviving an assassination attempt at a party, Jacob asserts his authority over Howie, insisting that the young man answer only to him.
However, Jacob’s actions attract the attention of his parole officer, Ed Kutcher, who becomes aware of the impending weapons deal. As Jacob preps for the sale, Howie expresses his reluctance to join the gang, and Jacob uncovers that Shotgun, a gang associate, is actually Kutcher’s informant. A brief visit from his estranged wife and son brings up old memories, leading to an emotional confrontation where Jacob struggles to hold back his feelings. On the day of the transaction, Jacob evades surveillance to confront Shotgun, resulting in a violent confrontation where he kills him.
With law enforcement closing in, Jacob frantically tries to keep Howie out of harm’s way but realizes he cannot shield his family forever. Despite achieving validation within the gang, he receives a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his actions. He refuses Kutcher’s deal to testify against The Beast, knowing the risks involved for his family. Back in Corcoran, a corrupt prison guard uses Jacob to his advantage but soon realizes he is being set up.
In a twist of fate, Jacob, armed with hidden keys and a blade, frees himself and confronts The Beast. In a fierce showdown, he emerges successful but is left with the haunting knowledge that his loved ones could be in danger as long as his enemies remain. With newfound power, Jacob claims leadership over the gang, vowing to protect his family. He later receives a heartfelt letter from Joshua, detailing their decision to move on and live a happy life, expressing their forgiveness for his past choices. This revelation deeply impacts Jacob, as he contemplates the sacrifices he made to secure their safety. The film concludes with Jacob, now a hardened man, exercising alone in the prison yard, embodying both his newfound strength and the weight of his decisions.
