A curious boy buys a fish from a pet store and names it Otto, beginning a small, hopeful adventure that quickly builds into a test of restraint and care. The shop owner, Mr. Carp, lays down a clear and stubborn rule about Otto’s feeding: “*Never feed him a lot. Just so much, and no more! Never more than a spot! Or something may happen. *” The moment the boy’s heart overrules caution, Otto begins to grow, swiftly outgrowing the fishbowl and forcing the boy to seek bigger homes for his unusual pet. Each new container—first a larger bowl, then a bigger tub—reflects a hopeful attempt to keep Otto comfortable, but the fish’s rapid expansion keeps stretching the limits of the boy’s world.
