1992 Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave 1992 44 on Metacritic, and IMDb users rate it 5.7/10. Our Echo Score gives it 45/100, strongest in character & emotion (60) and weakest in art & craft (35).
1992 Echo Score Breakdown
The film presents a mixed reception, with particular strengths in its performances but notable shortcomings in visual execution and narrative originality. Critics and viewers acknowledge Tyrese Gibson and Ray Liotta’s solid work, yet repeatedly cite drab cinematography, a low‑budget aesthetic, and a plot that feels generic and occasionally incoherent. The historical backdrop adds relevance, but the overall experience falls short of delivering a compelling or memorable thriller, resulting in a modest aggregate rating.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 35
In terms of art and craft, the film struggles with its visual presentation. Critics describe the look as drab and the production as low‑budget, noting limited period authenticity. Reviewers point to a cyclical runtime and generic set pieces that detract from cohesion. Consequently, the direction, cinematography, and design are perceived as underdeveloped, yielding a low art score.
- Character & Emotion 60
Character and emotion receive a more favorable assessment. Performances by Tyrese Gibson and Ray Liotta are repeatedly praised for energy and nuance, and the cast is deemed talented. Some reviewers note uneven chemistry, but overall the acting elevates the material. This balance of solid performances and occasional depth results in a moderate‑to‑high character rating.
- Story & Flow 45
The story and flow are considered uneven. Critics and users highlight a generic heist structure, pacing issues, and a lack of originality that makes the plot feel predictable. While moments of tension are noted, the narrative is described as occasionally confusing and overly simplistic. These mixed observations place the story rating in the mid‑range.
- Sensory Experience 40
Sensory experience receives limited acclaim. Reviews cite a drab visual palette and low‑budget sound design, with few mentions of a compelling soundtrack or distinctive audio cues. The film’s aesthetic fails to create a cohesive sensory atmosphere, leading to a relatively low score for this aspect.
- Rewatch Factor 45
Rewatch factor is modest. Some viewers recommend the film for its historical context and strong performances, suggesting a single viewing worth while. Others describe it as run‑of‑the‑mill and not compelling enough for repeated viewings. The mixed feedback results in an average rewatch value.
