Amidst the tense atmosphere of 1992 Los Angeles, as the city teeters on the brink of chaos due to the imminent Rodney King verdict, the story unfolds around Mercer, Tyrese Gibson, who has recently been released from prison and is desperately trying to reconnect with his son, Antoine. Up until now, Antoine, portrayed by Dylan Arnold, has lived solely with his mother and grandmother, harboring resentment towards Mercer for his absence during his childhood. With his mother now gone, Antoine is left in Mercer’s care, and Mercer is determined to steer his son away from the dangerous life he once led. Mercer, with a reputation built on his troubled past, exerts every effort to ensure Antoine does not follow the same destructive path. On the day described, Mercer urges Antoine to stay home after school, aware that the streets could erupt into violence depending on the verdict.

Meanwhile, in a separate storyline, a small-time thief named Lowell, played by Ray Liotta, along with his sons Riggin, portrayed by Scott Eastwood, and Dennis, are plotting a potentially lucrative but dangerous heist at Pluton Metals. Their goal is to steal high-value platinum bars stored in a state-of-the-art vault, which is protected with sophisticated security measures, including a steel cap that seals the vault if the panic button in the security office is pressed — a feature that could lock them out unless the LAPD intervenes. Riggin is confident about the plan, believing they can bypass the security, but Lowell is cautious, hesitant about risking such a big theft.

As the news breaks that the police officers involved in Rodney King’s case have been acquitted, the city erupts in riots. Antoine, furious about the verdict, leaves home and ventures into the chaos on the streets. This creates an opportune moment for Lowell and his crew to proceed with their plan, aiming to strike while the chaos provides cover. Mercer, worried for Antoine’s safety in the turbulent environment, seeks help from his friend Joe, who offers security clearance at Pluton Metals, allowing Mercer to protect his son better. Mercer also encounters his old acquaintance, Ori Pfeffer, known as D-Ville, who gives Mercer a gun for protection, though Mercer is reluctant to return to his violent past.

As Lowell’s gang approaches the heavily secured facility, they deceive the security guard with force, using a Taser to gain entry after pretending to have legitimate business. Inside, they unexpectedly encounter Joe, who is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. When Joe reaches for his gun, one of the robbers shoots him, a tragic accident that adds chaos to the already volatile scene. Mercer, meanwhile, manages to locate Antoine and drives him to the scene of the crime, all while expressing his fears that Antoine might become just like him — angry and disillusioned by the injustices and racism he witnesses daily.

The robbers’ plans unfold as they reach the vault and begin breaking into it. Unbeknownst to them, Joe’s attempt to alert the authorities with a panic button has already triggered a lockdown. As they open the vault, they discover the precious platinum bars and celebrate their success, unaware that Mercer and Antoine have entered the building. Inside, Antoine unintentionally encounters Dennis, who threatens him with a gun, while Mercer finds Joe dead in the security office. Mercer quickly arm himself with a weapon and starts hunting for Antoine, who has gone to the restroom and comes face-to-face with Dennis in a tense confrontation.

The robbers, noticing Mercer’s presence, begin a frantic chase inside the building, leading Mercer to disable the power in parts of the facility, which hinders their progress and forces them to adapt. Meanwhile, Lowell and his men are losing control as tensions rise; Lowell, angry and ruthless, kills Copen, the security guard who is struggling to survive after being injured. Both Dennis and Antoine witness the savage act, deepening their trauma. Mercer’s familiarity with the building allows him to evade his pursuers, but the chaos intensifies when Lowell, motivated by greed and anger, uses Antoine to lure Mercer into a trap by broadcasting his voice over the loudspeaker.

Lowell then demands Mercer to bring Riggin and the stolen rotor engine in exchange for Antoine’s safety. Recognizing Lowell’s true intent—that he would kill Antoine once he gets what he wants—Mercer devises a risky plan. He manages to capture Riggin and convince him to help, warning him that Lowell cannot be trusted. The tense climax unfolds at the loading docks, where Mercer confronts Lowell. Despite negotiating, Lowell threatens to shoot Antoine, prompting Mercer to shoot first in a desperate act of protection. The resulting chaos allows Mercer, Antoine, Riggin, and Dennis to escape in a van with the platinum, but tragedy strikes as Dennis is shot and bleeds heavily.

In a final showdown, Lowell pursues the stolen vehicle, leading to a fiery gunfight. Mercer, overcome with rage and grief, watches as Riggin gets shot and Lowell kills him. As Lowell prepares to fire on Mercer, it is Antoine who surprises everyone by shooting Lowell from behind, ending his reign of violence. The father and son, shaken but alive, embrace in relief, with Mercer comforting his son and driving away from the chaos, symbolizing their chance at a new beginning. The film closes on a note of poignancy, highlighting themes of redemption, family, and the high stakes involved when parts of society collide in turmoil.
