Dan Aykroyd Confirms New Ghostbusters Animated Series

Original Ghostbusters star and co-creator Dan Aykroyd has confirmed the franchise’s future includes both a new animated series and another live-action feature. In a recent interview on the Talking Strange podcast, Aykroyd shared these updates while discussing the franchise’s trajectory with Jason Reitman and the creative team at Ghost Corps.

New Animated Series in Development

Aykroyd specifically announced that a “really neat animated Ghostbusters” is currently in the works and is expected to debut soon. He praised the show’s character designs and its unique visual take on Manhattan. According to the actor, the animated format may provide an opportunity for the writers to explore and comment on current societal issues, suggesting a more topical approach than previous entries.

This will not be the franchise’s first foray into animation, having previously spawned the popular ’80s series The Real Ghostbusters and its spinoff, Extreme Ghostbusters.

Teasing the Next Live-Action Film

While details are scarce, Aykroyd affirmed that “there will be” another Ghostbusters feature film. He hinted that the creative team is considering how to incorporate contemporary themes, possibly reflecting on “the human species’ execrable behavior,” which could manifest as a new type of supernatural threat. The project is being developed under the guidance of Jason Reitman.
