What's After the Movie
Teruyuki Kagawa, born December 7, 1965 in Tokyo, Japan, emerged from one of the most prestigious kabuki lineages in the country, a heritage that traces back to the legendary Ichikawa Danshirō II and includes figures such as his father Ichikawa Ennosuke III and his uncle Ichikawa Danshirō IV. Despite being raised by his mother, actress Yūko Hama, after a 1968 divorce, he grew up believing kabuki was “something that must not be watched,” only to later reconnect with the art form after a long estrangement. After earning a degree in social psychology from the University of Tokyo, Kagawa launched his screen career in 1989, quickly distinguishing himself with intense, nuanced performances that earned him multiple nominations for the Japan Academy Prize, including for Warau Iemon and Kita no zeronen, and a win for Best Supporting Actor for Mt. Tsurugidake at the 33rd ceremony. In parallel with his film work, he cultivated a reputation as a tachiyaku—a specialist in male roles—and became renowned as one of the finest katakiyaku actors of his generation, excelling in villainous parts on the kabuki stage. At the unusually late age of 46, he formally inherited the name Ichikawa Chūsha IX, joining a line of actors who traditionally entered the profession in childhood; his son, Ichikawa Danko V, was simultaneously granted his own stage name, signaling the continuation of the family tradition. Kagawa’s career has also involved commentary on boxing and a brief scandal in 2022 when he admitted to sexual misconduct, an episode that briefly tarnished his public image but did not diminish his artistic contributions. Honored with the John Rabe Award in 2009 for his humanitarian spirit, Kagawa remains a versatile figure who bridges contemporary cinema and classical Japanese theater, embodying both the modern actor’s global reach and the deep cultural roots of kabuki.
