What's After the Movie
Noble Johnson (April 18, 1881 – January 9, 1978) was an American actor and pioneering film producer whose career spanned the silent and sound eras of Hollywood. Born in Marshall, Missouri to an African‑American family, his youth was marked by a move to Colorado Springs where, at fifteen, he left school to assist his father, a horse trader. Standing six feet two inches tall and weighing over two hundred pounds, Johnson possessed a striking physical presence that made him a sought‑after character actor. He entered the motion‑picture industry in 1909 and quickly became known for his ability to portray a wide array of ethnic roles— from Black characters to Native American, Arab, and Asian parts—thanks to his relatively light complexion. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s he appeared in dozens of silent films, including notable titles such as The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921) and Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1923), and he seamlessly transitioned to talkies, delivering memorable performances as the Nubian in The Mummy (1932) and the native chief on Skull Island in the classic King Kong (1933). Johnson’s filmography reflects over a hundred credits, featuring collaborations with legends like Lon Chaney, Rudolph Valentino, and John Ford, and culminating with his final screen role in North of the Great Divide (1950). In addition to his acting, Johnson was a trailblazing entrepreneur who, with his brother George Perry Johnson, founded the Lincoln Motion Picture Company in 1916, the first independent Black‑owned studio dedicated to producing “race films” that portrayed African‑American life with dignity. As president, he financed the venture with earnings from mainstream films, enabling productions such as The Realization of a Negro's Ambition (1916). Though he stepped down in 1920 to focus on his demanding Hollywood career, his legacy endures as a catalyst for Black representation in early cinema.
