Monica Vitti

Born Maria Luisa Ceciarelli on 3 November 1931 in Rome, Monica Vitti emerged from a modest family—her mother Adele Vittiglia and father Angelo Ceciarelli—to become one of the most iconic figures in Italian cinema. After graduating from Rome's National Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1953, she adopted her mother’s maiden name as a stage name and quickly entered the professional world, appearing in a handful of uncredited roles before her breakthrough in Mario Amendola’s Le dritte (1958). Her collaboration with Michelangelo Antonioni in the early 1960s, most famously in L'Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961) and L'Eclisse (1962), cemented her reputation as the perfect embodiment of the director’s existential alienation, earning critical praise for her “stunning” screen presence and an international starring status that even led to her image appearing on an Italian postage stamp. Beyond Antonioni, Vitti demonstrated remarkable versatility, starring alongside Marcello Mastroianni in The Pizza Triangle (1970), working with Alain Delon in L'Eclisse, and taking on comedic turns in Tinto Brass’s The Flying Saucer (1964) as well as English‑language productions such as Modesty Blaise (1966) and An Almost Perfect Affair (1979). Her career, spanning from 1954 to 1992, was decorated with five David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress, seven Italian Golden Globes, a Career Golden Lion at Venice, and a Commander rank in the French Order of Arts and Letters. After retiring from film, she returned to theatre, taught acting, and made occasional television appearances before withdrawing from public life due to Alzheimer’s disease, ultimately passing away in Rome on 2 February 2022 at the age of ninety.
