Luisa Malpieri Monica Vitti is married to the lawyer Paolo Malpieri Johnny Dorelli, and at first their life seems perfectly ordinary. Yet one day, returning home, Luisa finds her husband in the shower and suddenly treats him like a complete stranger, accusing him of being a sex maniac and even calling the police. This astonishing outburst upends the facade of their marriage and introduces a new player into their world: the psychiatrist Alberto Spinelli Gigi Proietti.

Spinelli, brought in to help, quickly sees that the trouble lies with Luisa and attempts to subject her to therapy.
