Hailed as 'one of the great drama queens of the New York stage' by The New York Times, Ireland's performances have garnered nominations for both Independent Spirit Award and Tony Award. Her acting journey began with tiny roles in the Law & Order franchise from 2003 to 2008 before earning recognition in Neil LaBute's play Reasons to Be Pretty in 2008. Her outstanding portrayal in the play led her to a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress. Apart from her notable roles in films such as Rachel Getting Married (2008), The Understudy (2008), and Glass Chin (2014), which got her an Independent Spirit Award nomination, she also embraced the small screen with Amazon Studios series Sneaky Pete (2015–2019).

Ireland continued exploring various avenues, from acclaimed productions like The Family Fang (2015), Hell or High Water (2016), Piercing (2018), The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018), and The Irishman (2019) to Netflix series The Umbrella Academy (2020–present) and Hulu series Y: The Last Man (2021). Her performance in the horror film The Dark and the Wicked (2020) also garnered wide praise. Apart from acting, Ireland is also known for her impact in the audiobook industry as she has narrated bestsellers by authors like Frederik Backman, Anthony Doerr, and Amor Towles. Her narration for Kevin Wilson’s Nothing to See Here earned her the Audie Award for Best Female Narrator in 2020.
