Some Freaks presents a largely affecting portrait of teenage alienation tempered by structural inconsistencies. The film’s exploration of social cruelty and transformation resonates in its visceral imagery and strong lead performance, yet a schematic narrative and midfilm tonal shift interrupt its cohesion. That duality emerges in critiques praising the emotional acuity while noting repetitious elements and abrupt transitions. Overall, the film maintains a distinct voice but struggles to fully unify its thematic and narrative ambitions.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Some Freaks
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film offers a focused directorial vision supported by measured editing and a cohesive visual style. Its visceral shots and controlled framing create a consistent mood, though there is limited novelty in production design or cinematographic flair. Overall, the craft work is competent but seldom transcends genre conventions.
Character & Emotion
When it comes to character and emotion, Some Freaks benefits from earnest performances and nuanced portrayal of adolescent pain. The cast conveys genuine vulnerability, particularly in the lead’s transformation, fostering emotional resonance. However, some figures feel schematic or underdeveloped, reducing relational depth. On balance, the characters engage effectively even as a few remain superficially drawn.
Story & Flow
In terms of story and flow, the narrative offers a poignant examination of teenage alienation, yet it is occasionally hindered by schematic plotting and abrupt tonal shifts. The pacing alternates between measured introspection and sudden humiliation scenes, which can disrupt engagement. Despite familiar beats, the film maintains moments of originality and thematic focus. Overall, coherence varies across segments.
Sensory Experience
When considering sensory experience, the film delivers an immersive atmosphere through its tense sound design and restrained musical cues. The visual style employs an understated color palette that amplifies anxiety, and editing choices underscore emotional peaks. Yet, the soundtrack remains subdued and visuals rarely innovate beyond genre norms. Ultimately, the sensory elements bolster mood but lack standout moments.
Rewatch Factor
As for rewatch factor, Some Freaks offers an intriguing premise and strong lead work that may invite a second viewing for its thematic undercurrents. However, the uneven structure and schematic turns can reduce enjoyment over repeated viewings. The limited variation in craft and pacing also diminishes lasting appeal. In sum, the film presents some rewatch value but is unlikely to sustain multiple viewings.

At Benjamin Franklin High School in Rhode Island, an unexpected friendship flourishes among three distinct individuals: Jill, a punk rock enthusiast weighing 250 pounds; Matt, a one-eyed classmate navigating life with a skin-toned eyepatch; and Elmo, a quiet and unassuming soul who harbors a significant secret about his sexuality. As graduation approaches, the bond between Matt and Jill grows stronger, leaving Elmo feeling increasingly isolated. Following their high school graduation, Jill relocates to California, where she dedicates six months to losing 50 pounds in private. Meanwhile, Matt finds himself back in their hometown, working as a dishwasher and saving up to buy a prosthetic eye to transform his appearance for good.
When Matt unexpectedly visits Jill on her West Coast campus, he is taken aback by her stunning transformation, while Jill is equally surprised by the change in Matt’s looks. However, as Matt spends the week with her, it becomes clear that he struggles to embrace her new, healthier lifestyle. This tension finally erupts into a fierce argument, leading to a painful breakup. In that moment, Jill warns him adamantly, > “Never contact me again.”
In the wake of her separation from Matt, Patrick, the school’s charismatic golden boy, approaches Jill with an invitation to dinner. Initially, she turns him down, but after some persuasion from friends, she decides to reconsider. As they prepare for a fraternity party known as the “Cattle Call,” Jill feels anxious about the expectations of being weighed publicly and participating in the night’s wild activities. Fortunately, Patrick proves to be a supportive ally, standing up for her when she refuses to undergo the humiliating weighing ritual.
As the evening progresses, Patrick’s older brother makes an appearance, whispering mysterious instructions that leave Jill feeling uncomfortable. As they move to an upstairs room, she senses that something is off. When Patrick struggles in an intimate moment and backs out, Jill retreats, only to accidentally discover Patrick’s older brother in a compromising situation, which leaves her feeling even more distressed and out of place.
