What's After the Movie
Lloyd Benedict Nolan (August 11, 1902 – September 27, 1985) was an American stage, film, and television actor whose career spanned more than five decades, earning him a reputation as a reliable veteran of Hollywood’s studio era. Rising from supporting roles in B‑movies, Nolan’s breakthrough came in the mid‑1950s when he originated the role of Captain Queeg in Herman Wouk’s play The Caine Mutiny Court‑Martial, a performance that later earned him a Best Actor Emmy in 1955 when the production was televised. Over his long career he appeared in over a hundred screen credits, ranging from the hard‑boiled detective series as Michael Shayne to notable dramas such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Peyton Place. He proved equally adept at playing law‑enforcement figures, starring as FBI Agent Briggs in The House on 92nd Street and later as an admiral in Howard Hughes’ Ice Station Zebra. His television work was prolific; he guest‑starred on classic series like Wagon Train, Bonanza, and The Virginian, and co‑starred with Diahann Carroll in the groundbreaking series Julia from 1968‑1971, which featured the first African‑American woman in a non‑servant lead role. Nolan’s personal life was marked by deep family commitment, marrying Mell Efrid in 1933 and later Virginia Dabney in 1983, and raising two children, including his son Jay, one of the United States’ earliest diagnosed autistic individuals. A lifelong Republican and fervent advocate for public school prayer, he testified before Congress in 1973 to promote autism awareness and helped secure legislative support for educational services for autistic children. He spent his later years appearing in commercials, receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, and battling lung cancer, which claimed his life at his Brentwood home in 1985 at the age of 83.
