What's After the Movie
Lewis Stone (born Lewis Shepard Stone, November 15, 1879 – September 12, 1953) was a renowned American actor whose career spanned silent and sound eras, encompassing more than four decades of stage and screen work. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the youngest of four children of Philena Ball and boot‑cutter Bertrand Stone, and after public schooling he enlisted in the United States Army for the Spanish‑American War, later serving as a lieutenant in China and returning as a major in World I. He began his theatrical journey with the Oliver Morosco Stock Company in Los Angeles, becoming one of the most popular leading men in American stock theatre and starring in the hit play “Bird of Paradise” in 1912. His film debut came in 1916 with Honor’s Altar, and he quickly gained recognition for roles such as the title character in the 1922 silent version of The Prisoner of Zenda and the adventurous Sir John Roxton in The Lost World (1925). In 1924 Stone signed a historic contract with Metro‑Goldwyn‑Mayer, where he remained for 29 years—the longest contract any actor ever held at a Hollywood studio. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in 1929 for his portrayal of Count Pahlen in The Patriot and appeared in seven Greta Garbo films, including the iconic Grand Hotel (1932) where his line “Grand Hotel. People coming. Going. Nothing ever happens.” became famous. Perhaps his most beloved role was the kindly Judge James K. Hardy in the Andy Hardy series, a character he played in fourteen of the sixteen films from 1937 until his death. Stone’s personal life included three marriages—first to Margaret Langham, then to Florence Oakley, and finally to Hazel Elizabeth Woof—and three children. A dedicated National Guard officer, he served as a lieutenant colonel during World II, and he owned a Venice beach house, a 104‑foot yacht named Serena, and a historic home at 212 S. Wilton Place, now a Los Angeles Cultural‑Historic Monument. Stone died of a heart attack on September 12 1953 while chasing neighborhood youths, and he was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
