In the small town of Carvel, Judge Hardy Lewis Stone and his wife Emily Fay Holden Hardy eagerly await the homecoming of their son, Andy Mickey Rooney Hardy, who has just been honorably discharged after two years of service. They still don’t know that Andy plans to rekindle a romance with his college sweetheart Kay Bonita Granville Wilson.

Shortly after, Emily notices Andy glancing at wedding bands and baby clothes in shop windows, a sign that love is on his mind.
